I don't know how "Chicken themed" it is, but as a historical reenactor, I do all sorts of handmade stuff, lye soap, blacksmitheed stuff, etc... how inappropriatly not-chicken do you think I can get away with?

Went to a flea market today and traded the two drakes I got yesterday for another hen.She may be a runner cross.but she goes well with my topknot drake. Also bought a dozen eggs. They are either marans or welsummers. They would range 89 on the maran scale. Not for sure about their hatchability but for two dollars I thought it was worth achance. I brought them home and put them under a silkie. Its almost a fall day here. Later

Hey just a quick reminder. We are still in the need for raffle and auction donations.
I want to have a special raffle just for the kids so if folks can let me know if they want to donate items that would be great.
The POOPS fund auction is still needing stuff too.
If you have stuff for that contact AL
Remember there are two auctions. One to raise money for POOPS and the other for everyone to sell what they bring.

Well it doesn't have to be poultry related but anything farm or country. Anything goes for the kids, even a bag of candy.

talbotthemad - when you start releasing birds you need a license from the state...not hard to get. For that purpose you need special birds...bobwhites...and I ain't got none laying! And only hatched four! I might be wrong but think I am the only one doing such things on here...there are several places to get them...in fact there is a huge breeder just south of me...plus Iknow guys with licenses to get them and transport them. My biddy up here concentrates on the ornametal types not the ring necks...but having said all that..it would work if you stick with those breeds. Don't get cotournix quail...that would eb rude to them...they don't fly real whoopy

forgot to add that I incubate and brood together all the time! No issues

I will find stuff for the kid raffle! Like chicks!

Did great at the Bridges Auction in Elgin yesterday. Did anyone else make it? I know some poultry people were there by the way those nest boxes and cages went!

Didn't get half what I planned on getting because I researched the value of every single item I wanted on Friday and knew when it went over what it was worth. The 200 old rebar electric fence posts I wanted went for what you can get them for new! The way the bidding started I thought I was going to get them for almost nothing. But I guess folks could tell I was too excited and decided they must be worth something.

Probably the thing I'm most excited about is the hardware cloth (400+ feet of 2, 3, and 4 foot high rolls in excellent condition) I got for $25 total. Now I can beef up my security the way Al wants me to.

I also got a nice stand that will work very well as a kill station for chickens, goats, or hogs, and a solar fence charger. Oh, and 2 cattle (goat) feeders for $5 each.

All in all a very satisfying day.

POOPS AUCTION INFORMATION

We Okies in the BYC are proud to announce the first annual POOPS live auction, to be held on the Saturday the day of Fall POOPS 2009

The auction is open to all attending and will be offered in 2 segments, the first part of the auction is for items that are donated and the proceeds will go toward the POOPS fund to help pay for the many expenditures POOPS have incurred. The second portion of the auction is a for profit live auction just like all normal auctions. We want to try and make this auction a success for all future POOPS events and our members to enjoy and benifit from.

Auction rules as follows ;

1. Check in time for items in both auction segments is as soon as you can, to enable folks to view the items up for auction.

2. Non-live poultry items should maintain a poultry theme, I.E.= art's & crafts etc.

3. All poultry must be caged or in a suitable enclosure, cages will not be sold with the poultry unless specified by auctioneer.

4. PO's will be honored in all fairness during the live for profit segment only.

5. Bid numbers will be issued to all who want them prior to the auction start time.

6. When the auction is finished we encourage all buyers to check out first followed by the sellers, so we can have an orderly checkout and have the proper funds available to pay out.

7. All cages and items will be numbered by the auction staff, and it is encouraged that you lable your own breeds for better identification to avoid any confusion and benifit both buyer & seller.

8. It is asked that all buyers wait till the end of the auction before gathering up their purchases assited by the auction staff. there may be the opportunity to also buy choice of a particular Lot, if this happens the bidder should have an empty cage available and close by.

9. The auction staff will not be running an active post on what is being brought for sale, but we do have a running post as to a wish list as to add fairness to the event.

10. There will NO commissions or Taxes of any kind held back from the buyers and sellers alike.

Items needed for auction :
Chickens of all breeds & ages, Chicks, hatching eggs of all kinds, ducks, peafowl, rabbits, turkeys, quail, cages, waterers, feeders, incubators, wire, netting.

The POOPS commity is in desperate need of someone who can sew well, and has their own sewing machine. If you can sew and would like to help out a little bit for our members contact AL in a PM and I will give you the details.

Lye soap for the auction or raffle would be awesome. That is my favorite poison ivy prevention - wash with that after you have been exposed to poison ivy and odds are that you won't break out with the poison ivy.

There are some incubator plans somewhere here on BYC that start with an ice chest. Holler if you can't find them.

Yes, different varieties of eggs hatch in different times. Chicken eggs hatch in 21 days, Turkey, guinea, pheasant and duck eggs hatch in 28 days and quail hatch in 16 - 18 days depending on the breed.

It is probably the wrong time of the year to find turkey, pheasant and guinea eggs. At least, mine have pretty much stopped laying. You can set the longer incubating varieties about a week before you set the chicken eggs, so that they all hatch about the same time. Personally, I try to avoid a huge difference in size in the brooder at the same time, because the smallest ones don't do as well when there are birds 3 times their size in the same brooder. So avoid putting turkey poults and pheasant chicks in the same brooder.

If you are going to raise anything that is considered "wildlife" and is native to Oklahoma, you will need a hobby wildlife breeder's license if you don't plan to sell the birds you hatch and a commercial wildlife breeder's license if you do plan to sell what you hatch. If you are breeding species that are not native to Oklahoma, you don't need a special breeder's license.

So, if you are breeding Wild turkeys, ring neck pheasants and Bobwhite quail, you need the special license. If you are breeding Golden pheasants and Coternix quail, you don't need the license. Unfortunaly, if the species isn't native to Oklahoma, it may not do very well on its own and releasing them may cause them to become predator food.

A couple of years ago I wanted to raise wild turkeys and Bobwhite quail, and then release them on our own property, so I got the non-commercial breeders license from the Department of Wildlife. I never got many wild turkeys to hatch from eggs I purchased and decided that while the coternix quail were fun, they were not enough fun to expand into Bobwhites, which I understood to be more difficult to raise. I didn't renew the wildlife breeder's license and decided to raise Naragansett turkeys instead. They are a nice heritage breed.

smfamf - Congrats on the soon-to-hatch! That's my favorite part of poultry.

Queen Scoot - Where do you live? I'm coming over for dinner.

Buckguy - I play piano, but I don't guess that helps anyone out. lol. I always felt like it was a crummy instrument to learn cuz you can't take it anywhere.

Do we have a list of Oklahoma auctions anywhere??

Anyone watching the BYC Trivia Challenge? I tried but its too much posting to keep up with!

Funny story since you mentioned lye soap... I told my other half that I made lime sweet pickles. He told me that sounded scary, and was hesitant to eat them when I brought a jar. He thought I said LYE instead of LIME...
