p&b thanks for taking the time to research this.. i tried to make some phone calls today and just got sent round and round... called my game warden back today and got the one who i really don't know... he still sticks with the have to have a permit theory...

mallen i pm'd you about some hens but forgot to tell you they are about 15 month old... they are laying now...

Great looking huts Matt, if they are as big as you say then you may very well be able to make double pens by placing a wall in the center, Then you can have twice as many..
3 hens and a roo should do very well in half the amount of space that you are providing..
See always thinking of ways for a person to have more chickens..

everything does look great, I wish you luck with your birds

Hello Okies!

Mallen - love the setup! Great job - I'm looking forward to seeing how those little sheds work out.

P&B - I just must say this: You Are AWESOME. You are thoughtful and knowledgeable and helpful and talented in many so areas. I always enjoy your posts - I learn a lot.

Teach! Are you looking forward to the long weekend? Congrats on the 12 years - keep doing whatever you two are doing right.

I'm lazy and sleepy at the same time, so I think I shall say goodnight early - sleep well all!!

P&B - I really appreciate all the research you are doing. If I have to get a permit, I don't mind.

Matt - Your setup looks great. I wish mine looked that good. I hope you find some chickens soon. It is lonely without eggs!

I also want to say thanks to everyone else who is chiming in and trying to figure out the quail issues.

So far in this post I have screwed up about ten times, so I think it is time for me to say goodnight. Heck in that sentence I added another five mistakes.

What the local game ranger told us years ago that any bird that could interbreed with one of the upland game birds you needed permits for them. Ownership of some species of waterfowl also required a permit or was banned as to having private ownership.

Henny it seems that whenever you put out hay you lose birds. I would really suspect that it is moldy in places you can't see it like inside the straw. Those that I talk to in the UK use bark mulch in the runs. It drains really well preventing mud holes. The pieces are large enough for droppings to fall through. It lasts a really long time and it won't become a big matted mess that is hard to clean out of the run when it needs to go.

If you were having breathing trouble as far above it as you were I know it was strong there at chicken level.

Hatching porous eggs, hard to do but if the entire batch is porous it could work. If I remember right an egg should lose 14% of it's overall weight through incubation So it seems that if you took and weighed like five eggs out of the bunch, mark them 1-5, and wrote down the weights according to the eggs then took the ind weight times .86 it will give the finished weight of the eggs. Then take the difference between the start weight and finsih weight and divide that by 21 to get the daily weight loss.

Reweigh the same eggs through the incubation process to see if the weight is pretty much on target. Too high and the humidity needs to be lowered. Too low and the humidity needs to be raised.

I'm up late, after the Maud auction. Is it just me, or is the older lady cashier kinda rude? I nick named her Ms. Attitude.

I wish there was a closer auction to Okemah, because those folks would rather spend $15 for RIR hens, than spend $5 on creole OEG bantams.

I brought my Creole beauties back home. I'll be, dibble dee flop dab, if I'll sell them for $4.50.

Lawton's Atwoods is a terrible place to get chicks. Real hit and miss on breeds, and they don't list what they are. We used them just for our experimental birds to learn how to get started and see if we really wanted to. No more, though.

The Norman store had a wonderful lady there last year that was in charge of the chicks. She knew what was what and they had a really nice assortment. Got great BO's, EE, Brown Leghorn, BSL, and RSL from them. She was really great. Don't know if she is still there or not.

I believe the lady you are speaking of is still there. About 5'2" reddish hair in her mid 50's, small. She is wonderful. I told her about BYC and the okies thread, and of course about POOPS.
Hey what do you all think about making some flyers we could give to perspective okie BYCers. Something with the URL and how to find us. There are a lot of people out there who would love to join us but just do not know. We could even put our cool logo rooster on the flyer. If this sound good I will design it and then we could just put it on the POOPS thread for people to print out and give out. Whatcha think???

Morning everyone!

My internet is still down at home, so much for having it up by noon yesterday! It sure has been a busy week here and at home! I thought it would slow down with the kids back in school! That isn't happening!

I am looking forward to the holiday weekend!! Shame on you for forgetting AL. Speaking of that. I won't be near a computer all weekend so if you message me I will get back to you on Monday night or Tuesday!

Everyone have a safe weekend!
