Grace, I didn't realize you had won the bread contest. Congrats. You ought to bring some to POOPS!

Grace and her father are very talented as well. They had some very nice pictures in the fair too. I cannot believe how many pictures were there in all. Did you notice the red, white & blue ribbon on the knitting dress? I think that was the top item of all. WOW.

The fair is so exciting. I can hardly wait until morning. (That's when we find out how our chickens did.) It almost feels like Christmas. I was out checking on the birds at home and there aren't too many left here. I think some of them are kinda sad to not get to go.

I'm so tired from all the activity. I'm ready for Sunday already.

Sad day here. Last night something - I think a cat - bent the metal tray under the pigeon coop and pulled it off its slides to expose the mesh floor. It killed and ate one pigeon and took another's leg. It didn't get into the cage, but it ate the bird through the wire - what was left of the main body was still inside.

There are two healthy pair left (two with blue and two with red leg bands). I put them in their transport cage and brought them inside. I put the bird that lost a leg in a cat carrier in a quiet place and have been watching it. It rested quietly all day - a couple of times I thought it had died, but when I began to open the carrier door to check on it the pigeon would open it's yellow eye and look at me, so I left it alone. It got up and turned around a couple of times, and late this afternoon it got up on its one leg, hopped over to get a drink and I saw it pecking at some milo on the floor of the carrier, so it seems to want to live.

I don't know what the prospects are for a one-legged parlor roller. If it survives and learns to hop around on one leg can it be used as a breeder? I don't know if it is male or female - its remaining right leg has a yellow band on it. I found a red band under the coop, but I don't know if it came off the dead pigeon or wounded one's leg. I can't bring myself to twist its little neck as long as it continues to show some interest in food and water and looks back at me with its bright little pigeon eyes.

I feel absolutely terrible about the whole incident. Dachsund has been very understanding (thanks Wayne!). I'm so sorry you won't be getting six pigeons, Teach - I'll do my best to bring you four and a half...

Hey City if its trying to eat and drink it may pull out of it. Don't know about breeding but it will still be able to perform.
Buckguy--funny you should ask,I was just looking at some on EggBid! And thinking I need to get some of those. They are one of the breeds I haven't had yet. The ones I have seen are really stunning. They have a glossy sheen that other pigeons don't have. Are you getting some?

City I am so sorry to hear of your loss, I have thought many times of raising pigeons again, when I was about 9 or so my dad got me some pigeons they were so much fun just not real sure where I would put them right now!!

Nnbreeder! My first thought was raccoon, too - just because it had to take some force to bend that metal pan like that. I do have some materials that I can reinforce the hutch with - I've brought the pigeons inside for now, and tomorrow I'll see what I can do to make that coop impenetrable.

ok okies if you think i'm whining i am... but i'm really po'ed and need to vent... you guys don't hear from me much so please just act like you sympathize for a moment... i have used the chupps 412 auction for several years and usually done fairly well from a selling standpoint there... i have always stayed with my birds and picked up my check which takes forever before i left.. i had to work saturday early so stayed with my birds till they sold but had them mail me my check ... so birds didn't do the greatest but had a golden laced sebright hen in a pen by herself and i think she was the only one there on saturday.. but a couple folks got in a little bidding war over her and she brought $28.00 so i thought that was pretty cool since nothing else brought much... got my check today and it was short by about $52.00... checked the tickets and they show her selling for $8.00.. and a set of 18 birds was shorted by $2.00 ea... i know we're not talking about a million dollars but it'
s still my money.. called auction office and they said the auctioneer said he didn't remember any birds selling for over $20.00.. which is crazy.. there were several bantams there that did super well... but they were beyond rude... told me i would have to call the auctioneer and see if i could get him to remember or not... and then told me it was awfully funny that it was two of my tickets that were screwed up.. whose tickets did they think i was talking about... so i called the auctioneer which i don't think was my responsibility and of course got his anwering machine.. and no he has not called me back... so i'm feeling really upset and stupidddddddddddddd right now... ok i'm done now... sorry you had to listen... but you have the option of ignoring my post....

Mallen: How cute! I love little babies when they are hatching!

City: I am soooo sorry about your loss. I had a bobcat go through my chicken wire on my roof and kill 3 of my birds last july, and left one for dead. I was pretty mad.

Sundowner: Thats horrible. But, sometimes it happens.

Everyone: Is anyone going to/entering chickens in the Cleveland county fair? I did! I entered six chickens and my three ducks, but it looks like I'm outclassed exceot for on my Mallard female.

Sundowner: Yea thats not cool! I would raise a stink is there some way to locate the buyer of your birds? Maybe they could vouch for the price they payed... Someone is either not being honest or there was a legit error of forget fullness either way somethings not right...

City Cluck... Just read your post sorry about the loss, but I gotta admit I am rooting for your one legged baby( I am a sucker for one eyed, or one legged animals... had a one eyed cat with a crooked tail when I was a kid because I thought all the other kittens at the pound were making fun of her and she wouldnt get adopted... so of course my momma had to give in... I know I am silly.. but hey is there a way you can make a wooden stump for it? It could be your pirate pigeon:D...

Everyone Else... Hope you had a wonderful Thursday... Been busy busy busy

We are having our fair this week also. I have a chicken each entered for my 5 granddaughters. My grandson has 3 entered in 4-H. They judge tomorrow.

I was at the carnival that is set up at the fair with these little rascals for 4 hours. I'm tired!

Sundowner, I like to go to Chupps, and we were there saturday. But, we have had mistakes on our checks several times. We write the selling prices down as they sell because of that. Our poultry sold on the first row and I went out in the field after that. The buyer is different than me, I would have told them the price was wrong when I paid out.

Snap, that sure is a little cutie you have there. I'll have to post a picture of my brood.
