Guess I'll have to give it a try, then. Does that stuff compost well for the garden?

LOL..Just dont put it in your rose garden...I used it one year as a mulch to cover my roses over the winter...and in the spring every seed the chickens had not eaten became a weed!!! I had milo and all kinds of stuff coming up....But..on the other hand...my roses did amazing this year....in spite of the heat wave....in fact they still are!

I use what I guess you would call the deep litter. I put loose top soil with the texture that you would get when tilled. My coops are 5x8, and I put in plenty. They keep the droppings and dirt mixed up. It stays dry and there is very little smell. I put the dirt in at the first of spring.

I've used hay before, because we always had it for the livestock anyway. I had to change it often, because it will be wet underneath and strong ammonia smell. Doesn't seem very healthy for anything to breath that all night.

Deficate on anything and I would think that the fumes might be toxic!

We've had a busy day! We went into town and got our flu shots and bought more coop building supplies. Caitlin picked out her paint (lemon peel yellow and spinach green) should be interesting.

This afternoon we let the chickens out to play. Here is a pic of Caitlin and Joseph with the japanese and rir. It took a little while to get them interested in something other than the straw.

The reason I ask is there is some kind of tree byproduct from a particular tree that is toxic to plants, and I can never remember what.

Plants don't like Black Walnut...there may be others.

Well, since Monty isn't here for a few days, I will take up his staff and talk to myself on the BYC Okies forum. It's not like it's a Friday night and I should have more exciting things to do or anything...sniff!
