Ronnie, I go down I40 toward Checotah at least once a month. What kind of large meat rabbits are you looking for? New Zealands? Californias? Flemish Giants to cross with another breed for meat? (the large bones of a straight Flemish Giant don't make them the best meat breed - but when crossed with a New Zealand or a California, you get a fast growing large rabbit.

Wich is the largest PnB, its been to long sense ive had rabbit meat and id love to raise some for me and wife (she loves it also). I could shoot a rabbit in the yard but durn if I dont like looking at them whitetailed rabbits (wifes name for them, not mine lol.)

edit: perhaps I should ask wich is the most efficient for meat and breeding to raise more babies for meat. To start id just like to get a few does and a buck, any idea what kinda $ im looking at?

Flemish Giants are the largest rabbit, followed by Checkered Giants.

I cross my Flemish buck with New Zealand does and California does, and also cross the New Zealands with the Californias - Most does will have an average litter of 6-8 kits and it generally takes a minimum of 8 weeks to get them to "fryer" weight of 4.5 - 6 lbs. You want to be able to butcher them by the time they are 12 weeks old unless you want "roasters"

How many rabbits a month would your family eat? That is how you decide how many does you want. I generally breed 2 does each time, so that if one doe isn't a good mother, I can foster her kits to the other doe.

Good NZ or California does of breeding age will run $15 - 25 each

A good NZ or California buck of breeding age will be about $15 - 20

Those prices are what I have paid others (never seems to work out that high when I am selling them

You want to look at the parents and any records the seller has, because not all NZs or Californias will have large litters or put on weight a well as those that have been bred for meat pens rather than to meet the standard of perfection.

I raise them for meat and I lik'um!! I only raise Bobwhites because I like white meat, Georgia Giants and Tennesse Reds. If you decide to raise them you'll need a permit, contact your local game warden, he will have to come to your place and inspect your pens, fill out some paperwork for you to send in. A hobby permit will cost you $10 a year, a commercial permit will be $48. The commercial permit is only needed if you intend to sell birds or eggs to others.

I guess the "where" depends a lot on the "who." I'm all for going a bit further if it makes it easier for everyone else.

How are you Donna? When are you moving?

I'm available on Sunday or Monday, all other days of the week I'm tied to a poker table.

You do not need to get a permit for all quail. Just those species that are native...or could be...I think that is what we determined....right P&B??? Anyways...I like the cotournix better than the others...they grow faster are more efficient and lay more. they were developed for meat and egg production and live up to it. Be careful when buying giants as some folks call all of them that. Ask for weights to prove the size. Several of us are raising the cotournix now...many got their first from me. they do come in some neat colors...

Hey Teach Any snow yet? Boy I hope we get some good snows this year.

No snow that I have seen. Shawn works further west and had a little today...it should get cold enough tonight but looks like the wet is gone. Ground is still too warm for it to stick.

You aren't lying about the buttons! I lost a couple at the first poops to a top opening cage and kids!

That is really wrong to talk about nationals...pouters...that is my next i really want breed...some super nice person hooked me up with rollers!!! They are so fun!!! I am not sure what type pouter I want...it has to be able to feed its young. I ain't raising anything that has to be fostered!
