Let me say first that this worked for *us*. My sister's oldest son was unable to be controlled with a diet/exercise change, so my sister opted the lowest dose of medication PLUS diet/exercise and that has worked for him. But at least she tried first.

I have always believed that medication is supposed to be the last resort. It doesn't usually fix the underlying problem, only cover up the symptoms. I noticed the small things first... certain cereals would have her acting crazy within an hour or two. Peanut butter sandwiches calmed her down. The time she chugged half my espresso when I'd left the room and she didn't go through the roof. All those are markers of diet controlled ADD/ADHD. So I culled out the fruit loops and boxed mac'n'cheese, check labels for yellow and red dyes, cross out corn syrup unless there's absolutely no other choice, and if she gets the rare soda while we're out, it can't be colored (she loves root beer, but it does NOT love her back
lol.png
) which leaves her with Sprite/7 Up/Sierra Mist. There are other things we do as well, such as controlling carbohydrates (interaction is different with a borderline kid... they are evil when they have a sugar crash). Fruit juices are 100% juice and I cut them with 50% water. It isn't difficult, it's just that many people don't like having their "conveniences" taken away from them.

I don't like to cook. I don't cook very well. Until I noticed what was going on with her, I'll be the first to admit to eating pre-packaged "box nasties" as J calls them. I've never been a particularly active adult. However, making HER eat better has made me learn to cook well enough that it's edible, and taking her to soccer practice gives me time to walk around the soccer complex and get some exercise. All in all, it has benefited both of us, not just her.

I should also mention that I've become one of those hippy no preservative/no pesticide people too... I noticed that when they changed the fertilizers/pesticides used in banana crops, I suddenly had an allergy to bananas that could legitimately kill me. It's starting to spread to other imported fruits, like mangos/papayas/star fruit/avocados and the list goes on. If I can't get it "all natural", I have to be very careful eating it because the reaction only takes minutes and could kill me... and I don't know if that particular item is going to be safe between periods of eating it. I have to carry an Epi-Pen with me all the time now. What we're doing to the world for our own benefit is slowing killing us off through allergies and general bad health.
