Easy? Or humane?

Since Al taught me how to proccess my own birds, I have done a few and experimented with several kill methods. To me, the quickest, most humane (a very big deal to me) death is a quick decapitation with a good, sharp axe over a stump.

Oh, and I got a lecture from a guy about the term cull. Apparently it means to "separate out", not kill. So, technically, when I was separating out my best Cornish for keeping, I was culling them.

I'm ElkHunter for a reason. I could have been the Redneck Elkhunter. So here's my first attempt at the Redneck Elkhunter.!

You might be a Redneck If: You tell your children that your cull rooster is a pinata' and it's the roosters birthday!

You might be a Redneck if: You leave your rooster in the neighbers dog pen at feeding time.

You might be a Redneck If : You use a livetrap to catch varmits and use your cull rooster as BAIT!!!

You might be a redneck if you make your pet rooster a cozy nest in the microwave. Don't forget to warm it up!!

You might be a redneck if you drop your rooster of at the vet and use your neighbors name and billing address.

You might be a redneck If you open your car hood to check for cats and leave the rooster in their place.

Jim I also like the alfalfa at certain times of year mainly from the second and possibly third cutting, and with narry a problem. I think the whole impacted crop thing is how you feed these types of forage and if your chickens are lacking a balanced diet they will gorge themselfs on the green stuff causing problems, Your birds free range and that is a big factor in preventing any problems. Alfalfa is a very hot feed when fresh and fed as a sole source, that's why caution and common sense should be urged with this feed.

Jim : How are the roads in Lawton this morning ????

In the over twenty years that I've had poultry, culling has meant to separate the bad from the good. That usually meant killing the bad ones because even though they didn't fit into your breeding plans, they fit perfectly into a skillet. But they don't have to be killed, they can be kept in a layer flock or given away.

Well my life just got interestinger....lol...Yesterday they called me from the pharmaceutical insurance that covers my mom at the nursing home and announced she would have a 33.00 a month premium plus 100.00 plus per month for co-pays on the meds she is taking. Strangely enough this is NOT the company that has been sending me EOBs every month for her drugs. HMMMM... So I figured after the holiday Iwould find out the deal. This morning I get a call from the doctor that the company I have record of has declined her Fentanyl patch coverage...as of tomorrow. Notice might have been helpful here. I guess the doctor is really fighting them... to no avail. I am curious if the nursing home has been billing 2 separate companies? My poor mom...she has ahd a rough go of it recently and I am hoping I can get this squared away without her ever having to know it happened.

(*Hennies points finger at head...pulls trigger...*)

Well I think I have it ironed out some... what a mess, but at least I got her pain covered over the weekend... STRESSS!!!

Monday I will start trying to get everyone where they should be... except me of course... I think the closest mental facility is in Vernon....lol

Sorry I missed this, Al. I posted the above and headed in to work. Today is my 12-9 day and Geronimo was already getting socked in.

Soon as I hit city limits, though, eveything cleared up. A few flakes but the roads are very nice and clear. Just wet.

Hello everybody!!!
Well I just got home from operation go out to the sticks and get chickens. Actually it wasn't all that bad the place I went was only about 18 miles from my house which in country terms right down the street. Brought home one cute white cochin rooster still pretty young, two white cochin hens, one blue cochin hen and a black cochin ??? Not sure if it is a hen or a cockrel. Comb is a bit bigger then you normally see on a hen but the waddles are really small.

The boy I got them from says that is how he pays for his 4h membership and activities by hatching chickens and selling them. Very industrious young man. Wish I would have had the opportunity to make money like that when I was a kid. I just cleaned houses to get spending money, probably why I hate house cleaning so much now.

So I am rebuilding my flock little by little. I do have 15 chicks coming next week. 5 white cochins, 5 dark bramhas and 5 black silkie chicks with the the 4 white silkies and the 5 partridge cochin that is a good start on the chicks.
Still looking for some mottled and birchen cochin. With those two I think I'll be good on cochin for a while. Then I think D'uccle and favorelles are my next aquistions.
