Elkhunter - vent sexing chicks is an art (or maybe science) and if done incorrectly can harm the chick. Some breeds are sex-linked, meaning the color of the baby chick is a dead giveaway as to its gender. Some people have good luck feather-sexing young ones - mostly the traditional barnyard breeds. Silkies are nearly impossible to sex, so I hear. So in short, it can be very difficult to sex chicks depending on the breeds you have. What breeds are you wanting to sex?

So do you just have to wait until they grow up or what? I see people advertising pullet chicks?

A profesional sexer must sex 10,000 chicks with a 90% accuracy before they get to work alone. If I remember right there are like 27 or 29 different configurations of the organs when vent sexing. That is why the sex-links were devoloped, more more reliable. There are also a few breeds that can be sexed by the wing feathers but it must be done on the first or second day.

They vent sex them at hatcheries and claim a 90% success rate.
I think there is a book
Storey's Guide to Sexing Chicks

Well, I'm awake... and looks like the repairs I made in the dark to the coop (they were relatively minor, but I am of the "take no chances" school of thought) made it through the night. I'm cooking mash for the chickens... should be done here in a few. This cold wet icky crap needs to go AWAY.

Take a break.
I am the one that runs people off, not you.

I do my fair share of running people off, lol.
I keep trying to take a break but something always needs to be done, just need to train the kids alittle more I guess.
I was sleeping so good last night until Carl thought he would play a funny on me at 1:30 this morning and I couldnt go back to sleep for an hour. I owe him big time!
