As far as I know though the Dorking is the only one with the single comb. And if it was just throwing an odd sport I would only expect one or two every few generations. Through time I would expect it to go nearly totally dormant.

Now these hens were mated to a single comb NN rooster and out of the eight chicks we also got only two had the extra toes, one of those had the lack of comb but all of the others had single combs and four toes.

It really appears to me that these hens were out of a first mating and the trait was not yet set. But mated with what?

In the pic that is the extra toe and it is nowhere near the fourth toe but comes out on the side of the leg like a spur button, in fact most are just below the spur button.

I think this was one the best Fletcher auctions yet. It helped that some pros like Mike D. were there. There weren't all that many birds, but there were more than the last Cement. There was a kind of energy in the air I had sensed before, and the crowd was decent. I think with the recent changes, they may have made it over the hump. I think Fletcher has some potential.

Saw Al there, of course, and Mike D. Met the Jer-man. I looked for you guys and for faery but obviously y'all didn't make it. There were probably others there, and I recognized some folks from other auctions, but I don't know what everyone here looks like so if I missed saying hello, I'm sorry.

Met up with a friend of mine, the guy who just got back from his apprenticeship at Polyface farm in Virginia. He couldn't believe the cheap prices and bought a bunch of stuff. He had a good time visiting with Mike and Al, I could tell. He is a very enthusiastic fellow. He seemed pleased with the RIR rooster I gave him. A real beauty of a bird.

He is going to be ordering 600 broiler in April, so he is getting them at a great price ($1.25 each) and offered to let me in on the deal. I'll be ordering between 25 and 50 for my meat bird experiment (to raise them simultaneously with my DC chicks and some Freedom Rangers). He said others in the area are welcome to jump on board, as well. So, if you want to try your hand at raising Cornish X meat birds, here's your chance to get them at a great price. Just let me know and I will tell you how to contact him.

Oh, and I bought an "antique" Singer sewing machine during Al's favorite part of the auction

It is actually a latter day copy of one of those turn of the century foot pump things. I bought it for a friend who I know is looking for one, but after she saw it, my dear wife claimed it for herself. We like manually operated stuff.

they all come out below the spur, some chickens have two spurs instead, but they all carry the same genetics, just depends on what switches them on and off, has to do with dominant and recessive, something mutated or you matched a link with a mating somewhere and if you kept crossing, then those would not go dormant because as long as they keep matching in the right sequence they should come more and more prevelant

Just reminder to everyone. Now at Blanchard we are selling goats, sheep, feeder pigs, and calves under 250 lbs at 2pm. Then of course our favorite chickens, rabbits, ducks, turkeys. We can even sell llamas. Sure is fun to have goats learn chicken talk.

Any of you interested in bottle calves we have a few available. Just give us a call. These are from 1 week old up to 4 weeks old. Not for sure if any will be at next sell.

Hope to see you all Sat

Jerry

This is going to be a great day for working on the place. Gonna skip out on church today to get some much needed work done while we are on our way to the mid 60s. Up early to take full advantage of it!

About my friend and his 600 broilers, the former Polyface apprentice...

He is going to invite me over when he builds his Salatin style broiler pens so I can learn how to build the real deal instead of my imitations. And, he is going to be processing all those broilers over 3 Saturdays, 200 on each day, and is going to "let" me come and help on one of those processing days. More if I want. Man, if I don't know what I'm doing re: processing at the end of that...

In a way, I'll be a part time apprentice to the apprentice.

He is going to have the whole setup, including Featherman tub style picker I would think, so I'm going to see if I can finagle the use of his setup to do mine when I have some of those larger batches.

Bless your heart. Did we agree on a price? If so, refresh my memory.
