Morning!

Our driveway is an absolute mess. Someone posted information about chat??? Am I remembering correctly? We have tried, unsuccessfully since last April, to get someone out here to give us an estimate on grading the driveway and hauling in and applying a layer of crushed roadbed or chat, if that's what it's called. The three companies I called set appointments but never showed. The guy DH called said he's get back to us a.s.a.p., but that was two months ago.

I'm wearing my swami hat. I'm remembering someone posted that her DH knows about fixing roads and driveways? If anyone remembers the post, point me in the right direction. If you are the poster, PM me and tell me how silly I am for not remembering it was you.

We live in Haskell, about 40 minutes south of Tulsa and 30 minutes west of Muskogee.

Of course if you have larger than standard fowl, such as Malay, Saipan, Brazilian, etc... multiply that food consumption by 10.

You aren't kidding! The Shamo roo in my avatar eats like a horse.

At night when he goes in to roost, he lools like he swallowed a whole orange. His crop will be pushed around to the side like some kind of weird growth.

Ok here is what you do. According to industry standards a brown egg layer will consume 4oz of feed daily.

take 50 x 16 to get how many ounces in a bag of feed. 40 if bought at Atwoods.

there are 800 ounces in a 50lb bag of feed.

I am going to use 10 dollars for the price of the feed, anyway you divide 10 by 800 which comes to .0125 which is what the feed costs per ounce.

Next take .0125 x 4 because the hen will eat about 4 oz. which is .05 or a nickle and if she lays daily that is what the egg will cost in feed.

Now I did say cost in feed, you still have water, equipment and labor to consider so 2.50 may be a good break-even for the small breeder. The big guys are automated so even though their equipment costs are higher their input costs for labor are much, much less and the equipment is figured for the life of the equipment.

Les...I think you are the smartest man on the earth. I don't know how you know so much about chickens and so many other things but I want to tell you how much I appreciate you and your knowledge. I've learned so much from you and you are always so willing to help anyone. And to top it off you're always so humble about it.

Thank you so much!

I think Some very nice person gifted me with a GFM, I have had mine for over a year and I knew it was due for renewal, so when I looked into it I found that I still had 9 mo left. So whomever did this I want to thank you so very much, and have inspired me to gift a GFM to someone else, not wanting to break the chain.

Thank You

We still dont!!! There is a promise of today maybe... We live about a quarter of a mile up a long driveway from the county road... They were sitting in my driveway yesterday evening... But they have to replace the lines that run from the main Co. Rd. To my house too... And a transformer....

After being without power for about 9 hours on the first day of storm, I wrapped my incubators in a blanket and moved them with us to ft. sill. Then we loss power there too... They were over 24 hours with out power, cuddled under a blanket... I have 20 Chicks that have hatched out of 24 so far.... I cant believe that I was able to save them....

The problem may be that those companies will either haul and drop the material, and another company will spread it, but few co's will do both. Try and get a rock hauler with a belly dump to bring out a load and dump it, then just call a local guy with a tractor and box blade to grade it. I like to spread what they call screenings or Chat first over a very wet soft area then drive it in, then when you get your next rain bring in a load of 2" rock spread and drive that in, your driveway will be super solid then. I have found that with Ok clay this procedure makes a very hard wear resistant roadbed, if you spread it when the ground is dry it just spreads out and you have thin strips where you don't need them, and big rocks in your grassy areas.

Doc : You will be up and running soon I talk to the road crews daily and they are working from both directions on both the main transmission lines and the feeder lines at the same time, and the poles have started coming in mass lately. Good luck .
