My suggestion is to approach it slowly and talk the whole time so it knows something is coming - skunks can't see very well, but if it hears you approaching chances are it will get up and move along. If it doesn't move, find a neighbor kid to run up and yell "BOO!" at it.

Honestly, I think it's sick. I saw it on Sunday, out at high noon laying around. It concerns me that they city won't take the situation more seriously considering the potential for a rabies outbreak.

I asked an OKC animal control officer what I should do if I caught a skunk in my live trap. His response was, "it is legal to shoot skunks" so I asked him if they would want to come out and do the shooting. He responded with "don't you have a gun?" I indicated that I lived in the OKC limits and he said again "it is legal to shoot skunks." I got the distinct impression that they did NOT want to be called for anything to do with a live skunk.

I think maybe you are. It was never meant as a criticism of either Al or Monty, or anyone else for that matter. Everyone appears to be doing a bang up job. It was a suggestion to a possible problem I thought Al was talking about in his post to which it was a response. That there are people who would be willing to take leadership rolls in the event or least to share in it. Al and Monty don't have to carry the entire leadership roll. Heck, our group even has a professional event organizer in its midst (it ain't me). More could be made of such talent if such was their desire. They could use the help. Unless I have misunderstood some private conversations, Al has intimated as much to me.

But all that aside, I still think it is time for the group to become more formalized. People are now being called "members" and "our group". Well, members of what? Group of what? There's nothing wrong with the suggestion about creating a real organization, with bylaws and officers and a board and the like. You made mention of a committee. Well, that's a start toward a more formal organization. Even churches have that, and there is nothing wrong with churches.

I'm not suggesting a change in leadership, or even suggesting there is anything wrong with the folks currently running things. Far from it. Al and Monty would likely be the president and vice president, switching those jobs back and forth for as long as they wanted. I doubt anyone else even wants the job, and couldn't do a better job if they did want it, or even get elected for that matter.

Me, I'm not going. Not necessarily because I don't want to, but because I would feel like I was imposing. I don't have time to volunteer or anything useful to donate, and so would feel like I was merely benefiting off the hard work of others without putting anything into it. I would feel like a moocher. I'm also not interested in ANY sort of leadership roll, if that is what people think I am suggesting. I was only suggest a possible solution to what I perceived to be a stated problem.

Monty and Al and volunteers, you guys are doing a great job. Sorry if I gave the impression I thought any differently.

Y'all have fun. Sorry if my comments were a downer. Memaw, sorry I disturbed you. I meant no harm.

It's been a long, intense day spent with a friend in the emergency room. I need some rest, so I'm turning in early. G'night.

Buster - I feel bad that you aren't coming because you'll feel like a moocher. At its heart, the POOPS get-together is simply a reason for people who like chickens to get together with other people with some of the same interests. I'm not helping as much this time, but I am looking forward to visiting with the Chicken Friends and Acquaintances I've made on this thread. I wish you felt comfortable enough to just come and hang out and visit...Dude - just bring a bag of chips!

I'm sorry you spent your day in the hospital...that's never any fun. I hope your friend is okay and all is better soon.

Yo Q! I worked at home today. I actually got a couple of things done between going outside every hour or so to make sure none of the chickens had blown away. I also planted seeds in the garden and watered. I ate a fried egg sandwich for lunch and just heated up some leftover meatloaf for supper. That concludes my exciting report! How was your day?

Did you get it to move??? I would suggest a very strong water hose that would spray along distance. Not that I have any experiance so do so at your own risk.
