We will be looking forward to seeing you and your family again, at the KOA.

Some hens don't realize the eggs won't hatch until long after the eggs have rotted and started exploding.

Try wearing some leather gloves and a long sleeved shirt with a thick cuff when you go to check under this hen. She will still try to "get you" but she won't be able to break the skin or bruise you as easily. You might also try slipping some just hatched chicks under her as you pull the eggs. Sometimes, the hen will accept the chicks and all will be well. If you do that however, you need to initially confine mama hen and chicks to a fairly small area, preferably in dim light. It works well if the temperature is cool so the chicks want to get under the hen to stay warm. Since she didn't actually hatch the eggs, neither the chicks nor the hen will be accustomed to the sound of the other at first and you need the chicks to want to stay under her for warmth for as long as possible, so they will recognize her voice and come when she calls them. If they don't learn to come to her call, she will recognize that they are not "her" chicks and may peck at them to keep them away from the ones that do come when called. She also may be so determined to get them to come that she can unintentionally injure them when trying to pull them beneath her body.
Good luck

Good evening Maribeth,
Thanks for answering Stray's question. A much better answer than I gave.
Look forward to seeing you again at POOPS. Have a great evening.

Hi-Jacker

Morning,

It looks like a few more hatched last night. They'll probably be ready to go out to the barn brooder by tonight. I know last year I didn't expect to buy chicks, but did, and I ended up begging a box from someone. I'm going to look around the house to see if I have any small boxes. I'll break mine down and bring along a packing tape dispenser so that they can be rebuilt as needed. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. Better stop typing and start getting ready for work. Have a great day, everyone!

So sorry to hear of all the health issues some of our folks are having right now, please take care of yourselfs.

Betsy : Sorry for the misprint earlier, thank you very much for making the centerpieces, they and you are wonderful.

Good morning all. I took the eggs away from my broody last night. I have never had luck with hens hatching eggs. We had a busted egg yesterday and the baby was fully formed and just needed to grow. They are due to hatch this weekend. I stuck 3 baby RIR under and put them in a big nest with food and water. They did really well all night and I look forward to seeing her raise them. This will be the first time we have had a hen with chicks. Last year when they went broody, we took the babies as soona s they hatched and had no problem breaking the mommas. Luckily my hen doesn't attack when we mess with her. She growls and grumbles, but always does what we want.

I will try to remember to bring some more small boxes. I just went to the post office and got the free flat rate boxes last time.

Well I gotta get to work. I'll talk to ya'll later.

Please don't report me I have been on my best behavior I think LOL. Anytime you can on the tables no problem.

Carah : If I can get the girls out of the house on time I do plan to get there very early on Friday afternoon maybe noon or before, just going to take my time if I get everything ready when I need to.
I do have to wait for the mail to run in case the banner doesn't come in on Thursday, they booked us too close together and I have to rely on someone I don't know to send it on time.

Doc : call me when you get the PA system and we can talk it through the mike deal.

I ate the whole thing. Had to make sure I wouldn't fail when it came to the dinner at POOPS.
