Are there building codes/ordinances by the state or is it by towns/cities?
Since Dustin is so small, do you think there would be many regulations there?
We are looking to try to homestead and use alternative methods of energy and things like a composting toilet, possibly wood burning cook stove, and to build either a straw bale house or whole timber home (we would definately have to do some clearing of the properties we looked at to even get onto the land, so will be lots of trees available).

I know that Austin has had enough straw bale homes built that they now have codes for them. Other places, not so open to the idea.

This will be perfect, actually, as by the time my eggs are ready and saved up, I should have a couple of 'bators done with their current batches and ready for them.

Watch those fingers, Al. I've always had a fondness of the circular saw and am more comfortable with those than any other type, but I know how quickly they can take a digit or two.

Chainsaws, on the other hand... them things scare me to death!

Ask to see the city ordinances of Dustin if you are considering living in town and see if there are any restrictions on poultry or other farm animals. The city ordinances are a public record so they are required to make you a copy for a reasonable copying fee, if you request them (usually about 25 cents per page - but they are required to have their copy charge in writing and filed with the court clerk of the county in which Dustin is located)

When you are looking at land, be sure to check who the electric company is, who the land line telephone company is, whether there is natural gas available or if you need to be on propane or all electric, whether there is city water, a rural water district or only well water, whether there is sewer or a septic tank is required and if it is septic - whether the ground will percolate sufficiently.

Even though it sounds like you may aspire to be "off the grid" at some point, it is good to know what your options are. Most of us like our internet even if we can give up television and other amenities, so be sure there is decent internet service available also.
