I have 7 Unknowns in the Brooder... Well that's not entirely true, two are Cochin Frizzle Bantams, though one looks more like a Bantam Barred Rock chick (like the one in my avvie).

Morning folks! Heating up to be a hot one here. Done been out and moved the broody and her chicks and fed all the ones in the brooder.
Got out and mowed the yard late yesterday evening. Just need to weed eat now. But that will have to wait, have checkup with Dr. this morning.
Everyone have a safe and enjoyable morning!

Good Morning all my fellow Okies. Hope everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. Spent all weekend down at Queen Peaches and Hi-Jackers and had alot of fun. Caught us a mess off fish and had a nice fish fry. Again thanks for having us.

Building two more coops to go inside the big pen we have more than half finished. The pen walls are up and the corrugated plastic roof is on. Need to make doors and put all the wire on, then it's finished! I'm very, very slow.

that is a lot of birds to process and still think there there will be time to do other things in the same day! We will be awaiting a report.

Well, it turned out to be fewer than 100. That was the original order of Cornish X, they processed 20 last week for practice, and lost 15 to various calamities including several that died of CHF the day before processing day. As hot as it got Saturday, it's a good thing he didn't wait any longer or he probably would have lost a bunch more.

Because the killing is the hardest part for me, and of the Salatin techniques I most wanted to learn was how to kill humanely by slitting, I took that duty. He killed a few to show me how it went, his brother-in-law took a couple, and I did the rest. I probably did 50 to 55 of them myself. My thinking was since they were going to be slit anyway, I might as well do it and see if it can really be done humanely.

It can. I think I now like it more than chopping, since the bird seems so much more relaxed this way.

I got to the point where I was concentrating so hard on doing it right and making sure it was a quick and humane death that the fact I was doing it somehow slipped to the back of my mind. They were also very fast (I timed Grady eviscerating a chicken in 25 seconds), so I had to keep up my end.

Anyway, this setup helped speed things up considerably....

Speaking of which, he plans to rent this setup out at extremely reasonable prices if anyone is interested. Keep in mind it is legal to process and sell without inspection up to 1,000 bird units (a turkey equals 4 bird units, a chicken, 1) annually.

PM me if you are interested in Grady's contact information.

morning guys! or i guess afternoon....
ok...here is a catch 22, i have a young silkie hen- she is a bully to the other silkies, if i transfer her to the other group she gets beat up on..... so what would you do??

meanwhile my injured hen seems to be handling the cut neck much better than me- looks like it will be awhile before she can be with the others, so she and her buddy are seperated from the flock while she heals

stay cools guys!

Looks like you have a "pet" silkie on your hands unless you find someone to take it! I think the others will eventually leave her alone if you put them together. She may be the low bird on the totem pole but she will be alright. Try introducing her at a time when you can let them all out for a free run or when you ad some extra special treats like greens, that may take their attention away from each other.

Dr said everything looked good since stent and don't come back for a year!yeh!

It hot hot hot!

Just checking in to say hi.

Wayne that is good to hear. I'm glad that you are doing alright. How is your MIL doing?

Robin have you tried putting her in a cage inside the coop? That is what I usually do. It helps to get them integrated, but also allows her some protection. I keep my brooder inside the juvie coop, so it is easier to integrate the babies when they outgrow the brooder.
