Jimd, I hope you & your sons can make it to Harrah on Saturday. What better way to spend a Saturday night! It's always fun to see what's for sale, and you can visit with some of us other BYC okies that show up.
Countyroad, the majority of the chicks will be white when the colored Easter chick dye wears off. I'm assuming most will be fast growing white chickens? It sure looks like there's a good mix of males & females. One chick has feathered feet, so I assume it's a white cochin. I put it in with a baby call duck that hatched on Monday. I have a bunch of call eggs under silkies to see if more will hatch than in the incubator, and somebody in the silkie pen decided they didn't sound like chicks when they began hatching & started destroying the eggs. Luckily, I saved a little yellow duckling. It was barely alive when I found it, and I put it in the incubator on the hatching tray & gave it vitamin supplemented water. The next day, it miraculously revived! I'd have given it a 5% chance of survival. I think it's special! I need to take pictures of the rest of the chicks to see if everyone thinks they could be. There are about 15 chicks that have a large brown stripe on their backs, and about 15 that are brown, multi colored speckled, 8 that are golden colored (probably buf orp) and about 10 white bantam chicks, 18 naked neck pullet chicks, and 10 black chicks that I hope are barred rock or austrolorp or if I'm really lucky, cuckoo marans. Right now, I'll just take the easter chicks to the auction & see if I want to keep the others ... as if I need to keep more varieties of chickens! I looked at Privett Hatchery's website & pictures of their baby chicks, and I think the brown stripe chicks could be silver and/or golden phoenix, and the brown speckled chicks could be silver and/or golden campines. I wish I knew for sure what these chicks are ... I hate not knowing!
I sure need to sell a lot of baby chicks before May, because Gerald wants to go to South Dakota to visit his siblings & their familes for a week. I just don't know if I can leave all my babies & other critters for a whole week. Maybe Gerald could just call his relatives on the phone instead of a trip, lol. I just want to spend my vacation time at home.
Graceful, yes ... I have over 200 baby chicks in the spare bedroom now, and over 50 chicks & turkeys due to hatch this weekend. Some of my chicks that are over 2 weeks old will get to move to the barn this weekend. I really should put the brooders in my shop building ... but the little baby chicks just might need me! They at least need to be checked on more often than the older chicks. I know, I'm crazy.
OK, so I'm NOT GOING TO BUY ANY MORE CHICKENS this year ... but trading .... hmmmm ..... and hatching eggs .... hmmmmm ... I can't stop looking at
ebay & eggbid egg auctions ... and hatching eggs at the Harrah auction
