Wow, so much info.

Sorry to hear about your DDs cat Al and your meat birds.

Congrats on the weight loss Lynn.

I didn't know that about the chick color. The Silkie momma that's a holy terror to any and every other bird that comes anywhere near one of her 2 remaining chicks has no problem with a couple other Silkie chicks I've got running around. The one that we had hatched here and the one I got at POOPS to be it's friend. She took right to them and I just thought because they are also Silkies. She probably thinks they're hers because of the color/age similarity to hers.

We've been catching up on the mowing. Now I'm going to be worrying. I told DH since they can't even keep the runs clear, we must not have enough chickens.

I found an egg today that I think is from one of our Cuckoo Marans pullets. Very disappointed in the color. We were wanting to try some meat bird/sex link experiments by crossing with our Brahma roo. I thought they would be perfect as it would be easy to just pick out their eggs to hatch. Now I'm afraid I won't be able to tell the difference.

Hey Okies...just a late poster here of late.

It's taken a awhile to catch up with the day's postings...

Al - thanks for the Stimpy update...I'm looking forward to meeting him sometime since I'm down in Lex now during the week. Sounds like you need to get a new kitten to help the hearts...sorry about the loss of DD's cat.

Hope everyone's chicks and chickens turn out alright. between the heat and rain what next? Learned something new this evening about grass clippings. I've been guilty of putting clippings in with my birds...never knew about sour crop.

This morning was interesting...our quail found a week spot in their run and tried the great escape. We used a make shift net to catch 12 of the escapees in the woods. A make shift catch net and in our PJ's with boots...good thing nobody could see us or have a camera. Only two remain at large....

Went out to check on things this evening after dark and had another surprise....

Dang snakes must like quail. I've got a coop divided in to thirds, each with it's on run and door....but so far only the quail door is getting the visitors.
I'm not sure about the rest of the state, but folks, here in SE OK, the copperheads are on the move. Be careful at night around the runs.

Good morning

I need some help also. One of my RIRs is sick. It is just kind of standing around not moving around alot it didnt even run when we went to caught it. its open mouth breathing and sounds like it is snezing or coughing. I romved it from the rest of the flock. Put it in the shed for the night. Any ideas? Thanks.

May be an upper respiratory infection - do you have any Tylan-50 or LS-50 on hand? Tylan 50 works best as an injectable - 1/2cc for a standard bird, once a day for 5 days. LS-50 is water soluble and should be mixed 1 teaspoon to a gallon of water and given as the only source of water until symptoms are gone and then for an additional 4 days after symptoms disappear.

Have you wormed the chickens? Gape worm is also a possibility. Use Wazine-17 or Piprazine - one tablespoon per gallon of water, retreat in 14 days and don't eat the eggs for 7 days after treatment.
(this information is taken from the Basic Flock Health handout prepared by NNbreeder last year - If you would like me to send you a copy, send me your real name and mailing address in a PM and I will mail you a copy - no charge)

Good luck!

Morning folks,

I have some web-worms starting on my walnut trees. Is there any reason why I couldn't (or shouldn't) cut some of those branches off and throw them where the chickens can get the worms? Anything there that would hurt my chickens?

Hey JuneBug!

I don't know about walnut trees...I know that black walnut is VERY toxic to animals...so toxic that if hooved animals (especially horses) are bedded on black walnut shavings that they will founder...VERY TOXIC...I believe that walnut trees also seterilize the ground where they grow too...I think I saw that on Oklahoma Gardening on OETA.

Good Morning everyone!!

Looks like a wonderful day ahead!!!

sgtmck1- What P&B told you is the best thing to do, NN breeder willl say the same. I have that copied from the last time.

Al- sorry for all the troubles that seem to be hitting you at once! Thanks for the update on Stimpy! So happy to hear the good news.

Funchick- did they re-set your password or were you able to do it?? Sure makes work more fun.

Won't eat Army Worms either. When it was extremely dry here in '99 of course there was an over abundance of grasshoppers. So many in fact that after a couple of weeks the chickens stopped eating them. Got burnt out on them I guess.
