Hello Everyone!

Grace I looked at your photos and they are great. I especially like the pic of the blue ameraucana rooster and the one of the white cochin rooster with the two chicks ("are you my daddy??" came to mind)

Thanks Monty for letting us know how Donna is doing.

Well I took a peachick and two chicks to work for my students to see. They loved them and had lots of questions. I am afraid there maybe some upset parents when the kids start asking for pet chickens.

My order from Welp hatchery arrived today.

15 dark brahmas and 7 bourbon red turkeys. Oh my gosh are the dark brahma babies cute.

and of course the poults are so sweet. This is my last hatchery order for the year. really I want to get the chicks and poults grown up before winter comes. Starting to make plans for next year on what breeds to add to the flock next year. First I want to get the chicken city set up in its permanent place and get the other coop up and insulated before winter. Just so much work and so little time, it seems.

The only things I am wanting to aquire now is, of course, peachicks. Which reminds me I need to go make a phone call.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day. It looks like rain so try to stay dry, too.

Good news! You don't use a pressure cooker for pickles, jelly or tomatoes. Those are canned using the water bath method. Get a Ball Blue canning book and all the answers will be at your fingertips. Didn't we discuss the topic of a canning class last summer?

Thanks

That is actually the caption I put on the Cochin chick picture! But they didn't post the captions for some reason.... I don't know why they were required, if no one gets to see them

Muesky, you don't need to insulate your coop. The birds put their head under a wing to sleep, so they don't need it to stay warmer than outside air. Plus, when the Oklahoma temps change constantly an insulated coop is likely to acquire condensation inside. Just my opinion. Others may have had a more positive experience with insulation than we did.

I don't have a pressure cooker, so can only do things that I can do in a boiling pot of water. Thanks for the note about the Ball Blue canning book. We may indeed have talked about canning this time last year, but I've forgotten!

Everyone take care tonight and tomorrow. Looks like we are in for another round of thunderstorms and possible flash flooding. I think that I need to drag the cage with the mama runner duck and all the young ducklings under a pole barn. I have a cover over the cage, but this rain is getting them wet through the sides of the cage and some of the young ones have had to be dried out and warmed up a couple of times this past week.

don't recall anyone mentioning that they owned swans, but this is a great group for helping folks find the poultry that they desire.

You might consider sending a PM to Michael Daugherty. He attends a lot of auctions and knows quite a few poultry breeders who don't post on Backyard Chickens. He is a super nice guy and might know who has swans.

Sorry, I got so interested in trying to provide you some direction in response to your question, I forgot to welcome you to the Okies in the BYC thread.

You have found a wonderful group of folks who live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma. Where are you located and do you have any poultry other than cool swans? Would you like to acquire any poultry other than swans? We have a proven track record of locating most other kinds of poultry for the Okies in the BYC and in getting it transported all across the state and sometimes to states other than Oklahoma.

Hey everybody.

I've got 5 chicken coops made out of insulated metal panels. I haven't had any problems with them in the seven or so years that I've used them. I make sure they have enough ventilation in the winter, and they have done good.

Yes we did!!! I just haven't had time to do anything but some jelly & salsa. Hopefully this winter I will get a chance to do some knew stuff. I have a new jelly one called red hot jelly, I am excited to make it. I did buy the book & read alot of it......then put it somewhere I would know right where it was, hahaha, now I have to find it again.
