We've always used the state NPIP testers, and it's only $5 for all the birds. They stopped testing at 300 of our birds though

I hope your headache gets better soon. I can sure understand how bad they can hurt. I suffer from migraines and sometimes headaches due to weather changes.

Me too. I had a 12 day migraine once - it was truely horrific!

MALLEN, Good to see you back on here. I have missed the pretty pics.
I have only lost one andd she was a hen with chicks in a cage. She was in the shade and off the ground where she could get a breeze if there was one but she died anyway.
I just make sure they have plenty of fresh water and shade. I wet down the pen area once or twice a day when it was reallly hot. A lot opf people use fans and misters also.

NPIP stands for National Poultry Improvement Plan, testing is done for a disease called Pullorum. Here is the description from APHIS

Raising chickens, turkeys, and other types of poultry--whether done for profit or pleasure--entails undertaking the serious responsibility of disease prevention. Probably the greatest single factor which limited the early expansion of the U.S. poultry industry was the disease known as Bacillary White Diarrhea (BWD), caused by Salmonella pullorum. This disease, later called pullorum disease, was rampant in poultry and could cause upwards of 80 percent mortality in baby poultry. Poultrymen recognized the problem, but were unable to manage it until the causative organism was discovered by Dr. Leo Rettger in 1899 and a diagnostic blood test was developed by Dr. F.S. Jones in 1913.

The benefits of this plan is that once you have birds tested and the flock certified then you are allowed to use the NPIP logo on any poultry products that come off of your place. It is what is called a value added type of thing as you can charge more for your product if the market will stand it.

AI stands for Avian Influenza which is a nasty disease of which there are many strains, the most publicised of the strains is the H5N1 which is still a major problem world-wide.

When a state inspector comes to test for NPIP they will often take throat cultures and test for AI at no charge to the flock owner.

There are many here on the board that are state certified NPIP testers including me and my wife and they hold classes once a year to become a cert. tester.

Grace, Teva and I usually charge .50 a bird but a lot depends on how far we have to travel. The flock cert. is a five dollar charge from the state.

It was nice to see all of the BYCers last night at the auction.Got to speak briefly with some of you.To all of you that attended for the first had a great time.

It was hot. The heat puts me into a bad mood sometimes. Just can not move as fast.

Thanks to all of you, I keep going strong.

Hope to be at Fletcher Saturday. I need to find a pedigree Polish rabbit before the first of month. Had one and the heat got it. The heat just got the one I had committed for a fair exhibit.

Hope to see you all soon

I have figured it out I think!! YAY!! I was walking around the property when I noticed some chain link fence scraps...I asked the bf if I could have them and he said sure. It is just enough to run along the outside of my run all the way around 4ft out! YAY!!! I am going to either chicken wire or hardware wire along the inside over the boards out about 1-2 feet to keep my chickens from wallering out holes and to prevent anything that does happen to dig under the chain link. On the outside I am considering adding a 3 strand hot wire.
Went and got some wood at the store for the coop and will go back and get more tomorrow. So I am happy with my progress!

When and where is the blanchard auction??

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice.

I had 22 hens and 2 roosters and lost 3 before the heat really started I think it was from some sort of respiratory infection and as I've learned it may have been Infectious bronchitis as I'm still getting a couple deformed eggs now and then. My coop sets out in the open and has no shade so I put some old carpet on the top covering the tin and water it down along with the sides and the run a couple times a day when it's really hot that helps and I set some misters to run during the hottest part of the day, A few times I've frozen water in two liter pop bottles and set them in the waterers they sure look miserable sometimes but so far I've been lucky and haven't lost any to the heat

I guess I spoke too soon, went out to check on the chickens and found my biggest Buff Orpington hen laying by the feeder she was by far larger than the rest and had to most problems with the heat, I was sure she was going to be alright though since she'd been hanging in there so far, I guess it finally was just too much for her
