ITS RAINING YAY! I so excited it has been so dry. We have been having trouble plowing, disking and cultivating the fields for winter wheat and Fall alfalfa. The ground has been so dry here and so hard you just can't break it up! It has been very frustrating. But it is raining ....please let it be more than a sprinkle!

Morning everyone Got a busy day here time for more building been at it since 5:45 am Decided to take abreak to treat a RiR I got in the med cage who weaseled himself inbetween a old piece of chicken wire and my new fence. (still no idea how) He broke his toes all of them and ripped his wing real bad, He is doing better today up hobbling around eating and drinking good.
Peaches The more I think of your family situation the more you amaze me. (and Doc also) not only does your husband serve his country with pride.
But you take on troubled kids. Where in the world where you when I was a kid. I thank the Lord for People like you who make a difference in the lives of others without you they probably wouldnt have a fair chance at life. ( I know I never had a chance I had to make a way.)
Al you keep stumping me keep it coming bro and good luck on the auto mechanic job. I am one heck of an auto mechanic promise. (yup I can change a spark plug its true.)
I really better get back to work So much to build and only my 2 hands to do it. hope everyone has a good day.

Chick question.....I have one chick out there that seems to be breathing threw her mouth alot and I swear i heard her sneeze. These chicks are only 1 week old the others seem to be breathing normally and no outward problems....I have no clue if she is sick or needs meds or what? Maybe she is fine but I have no clue.

I am still drying out from getting absolutely soaked by the rain. Had to run out to make sure that everyone's food would stay dry, that the quail were being smart enough to hide under something, and to bring in two wet and muddy dogs who are penned in the laundry room until they dry out, too. Hopefully it rains enough to fill our creek back up a little. I went out a few days ago and watched the fish swimming around in the deeper parts that still had water along with one of our big black water snakes that gave me the stink eye like it was my fault she had to live in a mud puddle.

We're getting some really crazy lightning and thunder now! I hope this doesn't mean that I'll have to start mowing again. It has been looking like fall around here with the grass all brown and the leaves coming off of the trees.

Is the breathing "labored" or is the chick gurgling when it breaths? What is its body posture? Alert with head up or hunched over with its head on its chest?

My suggestion is to put it into isolation if you are uncertain whether it is sick and watch it for a day or two. If it is sick, it won't be as likely to infect others. If it isn't sick, it may be spoiled rotten in a few days from the extra attention. Personally, I don't like to "preventive" medicate.

Others may have more suggestions or different flock management styles and can give better advice.

No she does not appear to be gurgling at all. she is still running around with the other chicks...she is not currently isolating herself...she is still sleeping with them...Does not appear to be hunched over but can't tell if she is just sleepy like the rest of the babies or overly sleepy. I put some vitamins and electrolytes in their water to help them deal with the humidity just a bit ago. She still calls for help from the others when i handle her so she might not be that bad off....I will continue to watch her and am highly considering isolation for her so I can watch her better but today was the first day to notice this...I am out at least once an hour checking them everyday. I am wondering if the drastic changes in temps the last couple of days is affecting her. They have two lights in their brooder so you wouldn't think that would be the case.

So I just got off the phone with the state meat plant inspector and he continued to somewhat (not intentionally) shoot down my dreams of building a mobile processing unit. He told me that there were somethings that just wern't reachable like a approved sewage system. I have spent forever and a day drawing Up my blue prints knowing it would be an almost impossible goal but achievable if I keep pushing it. I softly laughed and said "Well Sir excuse me but don't greyhoud bus's come with an inspected sewage system for road travels? He got quiet for a minute and said "Son you know your right I never thought about it that way. I guess it is a reachable Goal you submit the paperwork and blue prints and If there approved I will personally make sure I train some staff To inspect your stations. I will not hire any though until I have recieved the prints and you are approved But I will help you anyway I can.

By golly I think I did it

Edited to say I would be officially the states first Poultry certified Processing plant/unit We do have Darps processing but there not state there actually USDA certified. I will continue to work with USDA on my sitiations But As of now I am only selling locally. yay again LOL

Grey hawks? There is a pair that have taken to flying over my property, so i am guessing they've either moved in nearby or scoping out the area. I've been losing smaller birds, chicks & young adolescents to something. The prey birds are not as large as redtailed hawks. They seem too light in coloration to be cooper's hawks but do seem to have a salmon colored breast. I alsosaw them harrass a buzzard as it flew off from perching on a dead pine.

Any ideas?
