OK KA and Leghorn
Here is the semi scoop on superior's birds ( too bad I missed the open house) they have bought up huge flocks some of the best in the US and have let the birds go to the point of abuse last I heard some agency was supposed to be investigating, don't know what ever happened that was about 4 months ago. Where was the open house advertised? I do not live too far from there at all wish I had known about it I would have gone seen what I need to see and reported them myself. However you would have thought if they were planning an open house that they would have cleaned up a little. The dogs you were talking about were they Great Pryrenes There is usually one sitting in the middle of the road everytime I drive by.I have actually stopped there before and asked about birds but I always get the guy to help you is not here. Also did you see any water fowl?

Yes there were Great Pyrenees confined in nasty cages and there was also the one that met us at the driveway.
The ad was in the Sunday Oklahoman classifieds, Small ad under poultry and large ad in livestock section.
Yes there were lots of ducks and geese etc. also in small pens and way to many per pen with no water.
I hope they get them shut down!

sounds like someone needs to report them to peta. problem with that though is peta will take them all out of there and put them down they won't even try to relocate them, so unless the humane sociaty gets ahold of them then theres almost no hope for saving them.

someone otta put them in a crap infested cage and not feed or water them, and see how they like it.

Okcarla, if you take I-40 to sallasaw, and take the exit for 59 south to poteau, now 59 So. will run into 271 south and that will take you straight to poteau, when you get to poteau, you will want to take a right on to the 59 south ByPass, the turn is right next to the choctaw travel plaza, and you will stay on 59 south until you see a sign for hwy 83 to monroe ( the turn is right next to a gas station E-Z mart I think) and you will go about 5 to 6 miles and you will see the sign for the auction on the left side of the road. And the auction is just right there next to the road. now make sure you don't park on the side of the road or to close to the stop sign on the road next to the auction, cause the police will be there watching for that.

I will see you there. I look forward to meeting you. Jessica.

Carla, there is a big difference between you and Superior Farms (or any other hatchery); you actually have a heart! Even though you may have 1 or 2 hundred birds, at least you actually care about the well-being of each and every one of them! Think of all the posts/PM/emails you have gone through just to buy 1 particular bird - like the Jersey hen!

And, thank you, thank you, for picking up those d'Uccles for me

I usually sell 6 of those eggs for $10, but I'm sure we can work out a much better deal/trade

Edited to Add: I just checked and I only have 2 or 3 extra MF d'Uccle eggs, but I do have a dozen Porcelain d'Uccles eggs. Porcelains are like the Mile Fleur, only with the Lav (lavender) gene.

Oh, kaacres, I am so sorry you had to see all of that :aww

Thank you for sharing with us, though. It is good fr people to know that the backyard breeders are not the "bad guys" in the chicken business!!!

Johnnysfarm, welcome

A couple of years ago, we talked with them at Superior. They invited us over for a look-around and I never made it.
Given the concerns of bio-security, I'm not real sure I would do business with a large hatchery that is OK with an open house. We visited a large breeder in Sapulpa, and when we came home, everyone showered before checking our birds! It's too easy to bring something home and cost a lot of time and $$. Imagine the devastation to a very large breeder!

I probably over-do it, but I under-did it once and it cost me and my son. Won't happen again.

We are planning to sell our eggs and young birds once things get going, but they certainly won't come from hatcheries, and they won't sell for those prices either.

Even birds I bring from auctions that I know the background go through isolation. We are considering going the NPIP route, but that would really burden us with any birds brought in for new blood or varieties.

Other than OKChickenStock, what shows are around? I want my boys to try their hand at some small shows and get a feel for things.
Preferably something where the judge gives reviews rather than just a rating. They are planning to breed to the APA standard, and a critical eye would help.

We visited the show in Pryor, and have a little connection with that judge. I don't want that kind of experience for them.

Thanks Mawchickkiddie for the directions to Monroe. We look forward to the fun Friday night!

Graceful, I put your baby chick in with mine .. it looks the same age as my newly hatched silkies ... which we're bringing you 4 of. Your older chick is in a cage with the older red silkie chick. Even though he was used to living with a duck, I think he's happy ... sure is shy though. See ya soon!

Gerald told me something he overheard at the Harrah auction last Saturday that we probably should be concerned about. He overheard the auction owner telling another man that he gave the names & addresses of anyone that's ever bought or sold there to somebody that tests birds ... 10% of your birds. Gerald doesn't know what organization it is, but my guess would be testing for Newcastle's Disease? Gerald forgot to tell me this sooner, or maybe he would have remembered more? Anyway, it bothers me that our info is being given to someone else without our knowledge ... but I do want to get NPIP certification on my birds.

well I tell ya'll what we got NPIP on our birds and I understand the bureden of bringing in new birds for bloodlines but its worth it if you calculate the costs of wide spread losses due to pull or typhoid or newcastle. And the good nows on that is that if you have a child in 4-H or FFA, they will due the testing for free.

Okcarla I will see you there and I think you can still check them in at 6:00 or when you get there, I do know that alot of people start checking them in that morning though. I will have to check mine in, that morning so as I can get to work on time. otherwise I would be checking them in a 5:30 pm. Oh well I guess thats enough chit chat for now. Later Ya'll.

Mawchickkiddie, I absolutely agree that we should have our flocks tested. I know that when I buy eggs on ebay and the seller says their birds are NPIP tested, it definitely makes them a better choice. I have actually been intending to look up on the internet to see who to contact to get my flock tested. For some reason I keep putting it off ... just like I keep putting off calling my doctor to get a full physical which I haven't had in years! I wish I had a child in FFA or 4H ... how much do they charge for testing?

Grace, bring just the mille fleur eggs ... I have got to limit myself on birds I'm raising!

I don't want to be another Superior Farms! Actually, I wonder about them ... how did they get so bad? It sounds to me like there has to be mental illness or chemical abuse there to not know or care that you're torturing the animals.

From what I have heard about superior the guy married money and is spending it all with no concerns for the animals after he purchases them. From other court records I have found I also think the guy is a slum lord. I guess to each his own but superior is killing off some of the best flocks in the US.
