Sounds like they have a vitamin or mineral deficiency. I'd start them on some probiotics & add some vitamins to their water.

Sand always makes a good substrate and it's easy to scoop the poop out

Thanks for the welcomes. We do hope to be at nationals, probably on Sunday. I think it continues through Sunday? If anyone has any black australorp hens or pullets they will be selling there, we have decided that is a breed we are interested in. We currently have 3 baby chicks, a week old, that are a mix given to us by a neighbor, 5 RIR cockerels, 1 bantam barred cochin (Kevin), 2 black australorp roos (just started crowing) and the plan was to butcher these two and we will have to, but I really love the breed, they've started following us around the yard like puppies, a bunch of ameracauna pullets and hens, most are reddish but we have two very pretty black and whites (these could be mixes, I will post pics soon), 4 Buff Orp Hens, 1 BO Rooster, 1 Cuckoo Marans Roos, 1 CM Hen, 1 BCM Hen, 1 white unknown hen, 1 RIR Hen, 1 black unknown hen, let me think..... I think that is it for now! Currently the Amer. are laying and a few of the light brown layers also, my guess is the RIR and Buffs, but the black unknown is in the nests a lot too. We have a portable coop that my husband built and he is working on runs to attach for days we are not home and they need more room. That coop is divided into two parts so we can keep a roo on each side. We also have a smaller a-frame coop where we keep the younger roos and pullets for now. We just started letting them free range this weekend and it has been great so far. I'm surprised at how manageable the chickens are. We just have to keep one mature rooster penned while the other is out. So we let one out and in a few hours he will have wandered back into the coop, so we shut the door and let the other out. They are loving foraging for critters and chickweed. We are on 2 1/2 acres but also have access to about 3 owned by our neighbor. We plan to put goats on our neighbors part in the spring and he just informed us he's buying a donkey to put there as well. We also own rabbits and pigs. It is really amazing what can fit on a small acreage and still not feel crowded. I will try to post some pics soon.

Thanks, everyone, for the info about Shawnee. I am going to try to go Saturday.

I caught my stinky chicken eater last night. I thought I'd caught a small dog at first. The blighter weighed more than 20 lbs. I had to use a hand truck to move the trap because he kept running back and forth inside it, which threw it off balance every time he pushed off the back of the cage to turn around. I'm going to have to find a better way to secure the end of the trap where you remove what you've caught. This guy stuck his arm out and was pulling on the chain that holds the locking pin.

It's too bad skunks are such a stinky PITA, they sure are smart and cute! Now before anyone goes ballistic on me, yes, I know what it's like to have one (or more) under the house, in my feed barn, in the horse barn, surprise me when I come walking up the sidewalk at night and even more fun.....think it's one of the b&w barn cats as I step out onto the porch of an evening and try to pet it before I realized it wasn't one of my cats.....PHEWWWWIE! I've done the bath 3 dogs at 2 a.m. thing, had my entire house smell like scared skunk for more than a month, cleared out PETCO when I hit the door, and the one thing I absolutely could not forgive the little buggers for - when they tangled with the dogs and sprayed God only knows how many times, it stank up my brand new never been worn Sport Horse Nationals Champion jacket!!! $600 bucks, it was in my truck with the windows shut and I got to walk around smelling of Pepe Le Pew for MONTHS! THAT was the last straw.

Here are our chicks. The little guy that is quarantined in the box in the corner did not make it

He had curled toes and a leg he couldn't use. We hand fed him at first and he was doing better, then took a turn for the worst and we lost him at 6 days old.

This is Kevin, our bantam barred cochin and some of our little RIR roos.

This is our daughter, Lizzie, with our first egg! It is a green Ameracauna egg, but kind of looks white in the picture.
