I wasn't around when the question was asked, but I do not use lights on my birds unless I am brooding chicks. They are allowed to follow their natural Laying cycles.

I do have lots of shade here and I will be using corrugated clear plastic in place of some of the tin to allow in more natural light ( like teach is doing). Which gives me more tin to build more pens

Morning all!!! Heather and I got up this morning and made,Christmas tree, Gingerbread girl, Black cat and Flower biscuits, I made sausage gravy and scrabbled eggs, man what a great breakfast and Heather was such a good helper be it though a little rambunctious!!!! Jessie made coffee and then had to go to work, the kids went to church, I did three loads of laundry so far, cleaned up the bedroom and changed the sheets on the bed. Kids come in from church and ate, we put up the Christmas tree and Dakota is doing dishes and Heather is cleaning and putting away clothes. Aaahhhh Sunday the day of REST!!!!! My chickens are laying their little heads off!!! Need to get an incubator going so I can hatch off some game chicks and some more egg layers, working on a few crosses too!!! Have a blessed day all!!!! Lynn

You have found the best place with the best people! What kind of birds do you have??? Do you raise them for fun, for eggs or do you show????

I raise them right now for eggs...and I just enjoy them. I would love to get my kids into showing them but I will need a good enabler to show me the ropes.

Boy oh boy you hit the right place for that!!!

Heck ya. Where are ya, what kind and how much?

Mortos, you don't want his hens. They don't lay eggs. I think they are around too many roosters.

I have 6 chickens left now from my original straight run of 16. Lost 2 to hawks, 5 to neighbors weenie dogs and 1 to a auto/ped on peebly road and 2 roosters sold at the swap meet. I now have 2 Dominique hens, 1 black Australorp hen, 1 EE hen, 1 Dominique rooster and 1 feathered Cochin Bantam rooster. I would like to pick up another 6 - 10 hens that are already laying. The process from chick to hen is too long for me to go through again for a while.

I live off of NE 23/Peebly.

We are practically neighbors. I have hens that are laying. Not sure exactly which ones are laying at the moment but I have been getting more eggs each day for the past three days.
Most I have for sale would be EE's or crosses.

Have you got a place to keep them? Won't do you much good to buy more hens just to feed the neighbors dogs.

I picked up two Shetland Sheep today and the lady has a Sportsman 1520 for sale and a matching hatcher and a small brooder. She wants $500 for the incubator, hatcher, brooder, egg trays and all the other hatching stuff she has to go with it. It is an older model - with a solid door. I told her that I would pass along the information to our group. Send me a PM if you want her phone number.
