Been working out of town the last couple of days and just caught up with the posts.

So...I heard someone say it was Monty's Birthday!

I was bored the other night so I took a cross country trip on craigslist! Just checking the farm section out in each town. Went from state to stae. It was fun and interesting seeing all the critters and poultry for sale . And all the variations in prices for the same things! Cheapest place to buy farm animals is Alabamma! The further north you go the higher they get. There are a lot more poultry in the mid and southern states. Any way, just say-in.

Bout time for Teach and Monty to get on here isn't it? Wonder where P& B is tonight?

He killed my white OEGB rooster the other day.... Well not on purpose. That rooster made some gorgeous chicks but everytime you reached in the pen he was constantly flogging you. He got Carl in the hand on a vein, you would have thought he had butchered a chicken on my back steps with all the blood from Carl's hand. So Carl went out there and trimmed his spurs. I found him that night not doing so well. We brought him inside for the evening and he was dead the next morning. I think he lost too much blood and was too cold.

We have already replaced the rooster but I figure I can give carl a hard time about killing my rooster for at least another week. Just one more chicken I wanted to keep that he got rid of....LOL

Oh I'm sorrry that happened!!! How did he trim them? I have one that I will have to do soon, although he is behaving better since we started hand feeding him.

At first he would try to eat it out of your finger tips but couldn't do it without flogging at the same time. I think Lil'Sooner was posting about it the other night.

I would give him a hard time too steph!

If we dont twist them off then we take a pair of dog toenail clippers and clip them down( that is what he did this time). He just took the tips off. We have trimmed him and others before and never had any problems so I think it was a combination of the cold and blood loss. the rooster was great unless he was with his girls then he was a total butt. Carl was just as upset as I was to loose him. He was about 4 years old.

So what do you all think about all these wild birds dieing? Its really strange that its happened at the same time in so many different areas. I am amased that the CDC hasn't gotten involved. It seems that I have seen bigger flocks this year than ever before. I wonder if its a cycle die off like the deer do.Hope its not some bird flu type of thing. Thats all it would take to shut down the "little " poultry growers. Which by the way,the founder of Tysons died today,He was 80,Of course he was a Tyson!

Yeah Wayne I don't know if I buy the whole firework's thing, I prefer to think it was far more sinistir, makes for better reading LOL.

I have read about that too. They continue to say that it isn't sickness but the reasons they do give don't make sense to me at all.

have you ever heard about doing the spurs with a hot baked potato? there was a thread talking about it

meanwhile my EE pullet is doing better today, her swelled toe is going down, did put some neosporin on it yesterdah and drawing salve on it tonite

and i bathed and trimmed the silkies top knots- get a load of the pullet looking at that cockeral!

there has been alot of talk on the bird dieoffs on the bird rescue sites, you can get a different view by reading news sites from other countries too... i don't believe the fireworks theory- the town is only 4000 population, maybe a downburst?

I must admit I do find the large die off of so many wild birds during the end of a winter migration, there are several factors that could be coming into play however I have seen similar reports from Europe as well. I doubt that it is a disease considering how wide spread the issue is however it is always possible. The report from the black birds in arkansas was initially passed off as lightning or storms then later stress. they are investigating much more heavily in europe as they have had a major feed issue and culling of 100's of thousands of egg layers in germany. We may never know the truth of the matter and all we can do take care of ours as best possible and keep with the state recommended testing. Carl.
