You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they live in Oklahoma. Since you are just getting started, it seems only fair to warn you the this group is a very helpful group who will try and assist you in the acquisition of any additional poultry you might want to acquire.
Disclaimer: some of us have addictions to acquiring poultry, hatching poultry and attending poultry auctions. Since addicts tend to be enablers, we may try to assist you in the acquisition of some of our addictions.

Good morning everyone
Very cold had to break up a lot of water..but everyone seems to be ok..

Wayne you were very deep last night with loads of truth . My scare a couple of years ago really made me look at life in a whole new way.
Now everyday is day by day

Here is a question for those of you that use them

What size is your breeding pen? And do you use a pair or trio in each pen, and how long do you keep the birds together ?

Thanks for all answers

Don

Difficult questions Don. I try and give them as much room as I can. Mine are bantams so I can keep a pir or trio in a pen 3x3 and they do all right. Of course I also cram more together when I have to. I have two pens that are 6x6 and have about ten in each, but they have lots of roost space too and aren't all on the floor at the same time so don't seem at all crowed. I prefer trios to pairs if I can find enough of a breed. Just gives more genetic material. Mine stay together throughout the breeding season( jan thru oct for me) then I mix them for convience in taking care of. I don't hatch in winter. There really is no set rule just what works for you.

I haven't started breeding yet but for starting out & the pen sizes that I will be working with I am starting wtih trio's & pairs.

Most of my breeding pens are 8x8 or so. I usually have 5 or 6 hens with the roo sometimes more.
When I redo my pens I am gonna make them more narrow.
I usually just leave the roo in with the hens all the time during the breeding season unless he his roughing them up. If that is happening, I will take him out for a few days and then put him back.
I have also used one rooster in two pens before and just alternated him back and forth every four or five days. It gave the hens a little break and he was happy.
Several years back, I used single hens in mating with the rooster. I used small pens and it worked well.
