Harrah Auction:

Gosh, I wanted to meet Cheryl, aka Summerwindsfarm ... maybe next time! I agree with you about the auctioneer needing to say what the birds are when they come up. There would definitely be more bidders that way. Sometimes the auctioneer doesn't know for certain what the bird is though ... especially if the seller isn't there and the cage doesn't indicate the variety. The man that is #1500 is known as Pat (I think) and he resells the majority of the birds that he buys ... he sells at Mary's Swap Meet, and I hear that he is considering starting his own auction. He sits to the side of the auction ring (out of sight) and usually starts the bid, so if he wants it ... he usually gets it. Another thing that bothers us about the auction is if a bidder tries to bid and the auctioneer says sold at the same time ... I think it should be opened back up again, not closed. It would benefit the intended buyer, the seller, and the auction house if the price goes higher.

Lisa, aka Critter was there and bought some of my white guinea chicks! Thank you Lisa! Oh, and thanks for introducing me to the lady with peacocks!

Monty, aka Buckguy20, I definitely want some of those eggs. Also, I'll check to see how many phoenix pullets I have.

Yes, the Harrah auction was definitely the place to buy but not sell anything this time around. Gosh, if I'd known nobody was bringing chicks, I'd have brought some Jersey Giant chicks, and some Ameraucana chicks and maybe some Brabanter and Spitzhauben chicks ... although with the prices so low, I'd probably PO'd & brought them back home. I'll just get some more pens built & let them grow a bit & maybe sell some later.

I was looking forwards to getting to meet you too. Im sure i'll go again..though not sure when. Probably take me a few weeks to talk Den into going again. He was pretty disgusted. I rarely buy adult birds so it wasnt that it really affected me personally but its troublesome when something feels crooked sigh.

If thats the case then they need to take time to write what is on the tags when they are checking ppl..like most other auctions do...so that they know what it is and can announce it. At least in the beginning Paul would call out what the bird was most of the time..now that doesnt even happen. Den thinks its no accident. I said but when they dont announce what it is it goes cheaper and they make less commission? He said well 10% of $10 is a $1..but if they sell a bird for $2 cause no one knows what it is (and that happens a lot) to someone they know who takes it somewhere else and sells it for $15 thats a lot larger profit margin. He has a really good point and considering how often it happens its certainly a possibility. I dont think theres anyone out there that doesnt think that kind of thing and shill bidding dont happen at auctions from time to time..but ive never seen it so blantant before. Its really a turn off to me both as a buyer and seller.

Well if he does you guys let me know so that i can avoid it! And yes it bothers me that he sits to the side where he acnt be seen. And it bothers me when they reauction things..that smacks of shill bidding.

Yes that bothers us too..and i dont think thats an accident either sigh. Too often i see someones bid not recognized in time and while that happens once in awhile it happens a *lot* there. Ive been doing all kinds of auctions from livestock to antiques for the last 30 years and this one just leaves me shaking my head. I hated the Newalla auction closing so i was really excited about this one..but its been a real disappointment for me. Prague is more hassle but at least i can trust them to honestly try to sell my birds..which is all a seller can really ask.

I hatched some fo your Spitzhauben eggs for Deedra a couple of months ago. Id be interested in prices on your chicks...and the brabanters too. I was really surprised that there were so few chicks there since this is pretty much chick season but i suspect a lot of sellers are becoming buyers only or just skipping it altogether.

Cheryl,

I have several dozen in the incubator right now, and have decided to stop selling on ebay for a few weeks to hatch a bunch of chicks for next year's new hens & roosters. So, I expect to have quite a few available soon ... and, I give discounts to BYC Okies!

I'm glad you put into words your feelings on the Harrah auction ... maybe it will help improve the auction if they see what we've said?

Hi nnbreeder,

WELCOME to the Okies in the BYC!

So you are a naked neck breeder? I have some buff naked neck pullet chicks that I bought from my feed store the day before Easter .... OK, well they aren't technically chicks anymore.

I may be looking for a nice young rooster to go with them. Might you know of any?

I don't have any buffs but I think I have some blacks, reds and maybe barred. If you are trying to get some good birds I would put a Buff Orpington over the hens as hatchery stock is usually on the smallish side for my tastes. It seems that frequent outcrosses are needed to keep the birds up where I like them. Do you want some to show or just layers? Ed Hayworth up by Tulsa may have some or know where some can be had.

The Harrah auction has had some problems but it is not that bad to me.
I know a lot of people stuck their necks out to get it started and I hope it survives.
When the other auction near me closed I went through withdrawal. I don't know if I can handle another one going away if they ever decide to close it.

The wife often goes to the auction up at Jones, mostly a horse auction but they sell to much tack and junk for me. She has been to Ensign's auction a time or two also. I told her about the Harrah auction and there was a sparkle in her eye. Might be going one of these days. Like she said tonight that is her home ground, the Jones/Spencer area.

We have RIRs, Black Giants, Phoenix, Malay and our Naked Necks plus a few mutts running around from various breeding projects. The wife has four horses, two paint and two Palimino, all of them Quarter horses but none are registered. They can't read anyways!
