I think that the deep litter has kept our big coop warm this winter, but I do not look forward to the day (in the near future) where I will be out there with the wheelbarrow shoveling it out. I foresee many, many trips back and forth to get it all over to the compost bins.

But I am hoping to actually grow something in the garden this year besides weeds and grass, so I have been diligently turning the compost and getting the greenhouse cleared out. The chickens and quail in the smaller coops have already been contributing materials to the Great Compost Project all winter long.

I saw that - "Prada purse.....Paris Hilton........." Ha! I enjoy my cute chickens. Funny, little dogs aren't my choice in canines.
Al, your meat birds look like the kind of chichens to raise to help you take over the world.

Matt, sorry your experience with wood shavings wasn't a positive one (you did use shavings rather than "chips" didn't you?) I have been using wood shavings for about 8 years and like the way they break down into a substance about the consistency of sand. I usually load them up in 5 gallon buckets to haul them out of the shed and then load the buckets into the garden trailer to take them to the compost pile.

I tried straw in the runs one year - talk about mold and slippery when wet!

Dont get me wrong I love the deep litter method I also ove the wood shavings. But then I also never expected a roof to cave in and get that much wet and with the storm lasting as long as it did and the extra snow just snowing into the coop since the roof was caved in the mess it made was horrible. at least with hay if it gets wet you can get it out asap in large quantitees I use wheat straw not actual hay.

Grace is still around. With all the cold weather
30285_children21.gif
she has been letting me help with the flock and she has been working around the house.

I did tell her this morning about the show being canceled and she is going to contact you about trying to get the birds to you somehow.

I will remind her to contact you tomorrow.
