This is the 4th one we know about in so many years. My problem is I'll carry a 22 rifle....will it kill a cougar at close range if I hit it with the barrel of the gun mid-charge? I haven't strapped on a side-arm is many years.

Supposedly cougars aren't living in central Oklahoma...according to the state wildlife folks....but we know better out here. Calves, baby goats, deer disappear and remains are found buried under leaves or in crooks of trees. One had a tracking device on it.

I am a volunteer guide for the Keystone Ancient Forest (crosstimber) west of Sand Springs. We have been trained about wildlife in the area, including cougars, which have not been documented in the Forest but which have been documented in the area. I think our documented instance on cougar is what you referred to closer to Meeker. I am not a munitions expert, but my opinion is that a well-placed .22 round would do little more than make a big cat stop and think again before continuing an attack, but I would not stake my life on a .22 bullet to defend me against a predator of that size and disposition. If I knew I actually might be threatened by something that could actually kill and eat me...I would be carrying a shotgun.

NanaKat! I want to meet you at POOPS...not read about you in the paper!

I meant that hitting it with the barrel would be the quickest response this old woman would have to a surprise attack by a big cat...and my 22 kills coyotes. I'm glad to hear that our big cats are documented. Their scream can raise the hair on the back of your neck....certainly a sound you won't forget.
Wish we could attend POOPS or even some of the auctions yall visit about. Hubby has had numerous surgeries in the past several years and has one scheduled for April 1. The calving season is upon us now and we spend several hours a day just checking the herds for cows on the ground. Right now it's zero to three a day with three a day checks besides the feeding and haying we do.....and this is retirement.

I sure enjoyed being in the pew in front of you in church - Jean sings great. Sorry, I couldn't tell if you were singing... I just wish we could have spent more time together - it was so great to see you!

Really ? I want one! I've dispatched chicken predators with a .22 rifle and pistol (and cried after 'cuz I'm such a girl). But of course none of those were attacking me, so in my mind I can't imagine defending myself with a little .22 caliber against anything that's really trying to 'get me." (Against a person, maybe...cuz they're silly...and like me, I'd hope they would see and gun and think "Holy Crap...GUN!!")

I'd be scared to get close enough to a predator animal as big as a cougar with just the .22 calibers I have. But I am not educated on ammunition. If they get through my JRT, I'll only have the 12 gauge, a .22 rifle, a .22 pistol, an AR-15, my .357 revolver, an M9, a Glock 9mm, a .38 special revolver, my cute little .380 (which I'll have to dig around in my purse to find, and it would probably just be more more effective to throw my purse at an attacker) and my two .45 's to keep me safe.

Geez...now that I typed that out...I'm really not as afraid of cougars....and if the Zombies come, I am so ready!

If you really want to scare somebody, with a gun, it's better to have chocolate gun because somebody is probably going to make you eat it. (that has been my husband's favorite line for 25 years working as a lawman.)

Morning all, for some reason I was logged out this morning and when I opened my email I didn't have a full mailbox as usual! I had to go in using the long way but I am here now!!! Went for a job interview yesterday, was offered a job, less pay than I make now but my job ends in July so I am looking around, this one is close to home, am going Friday to do a tour of their facilities and talk to the people I would be working with. It is scary jumping back into the workforse at 50 years old and having worked in one job for the past 27 years, but I need a job so I am off to the salt mines again this morning! Yall have a blessed day all!!! Lynn
