This is the 4th one we know about in so many years. My problem is I'll carry a 22 rifle....will it kill a cougar at close range if I hit it with the barrel of the gun mid-charge? I haven't strapped on a side-arm is many years.
Supposedly cougars aren't living in central Oklahoma...according to the state wildlife folks....but we know better out here. Calves, baby goats, deer disappear and remains are found buried under leaves or in crooks of trees. One had a tracking device on it.
I am a volunteer guide for the Keystone Ancient Forest (crosstimber) west of Sand Springs. We have been trained about wildlife in the area, including cougars, which have not been documented in the Forest but which have been documented in the area. I think our documented instance on cougar is what you referred to closer to Meeker. I am not a munitions expert, but my opinion is that a well-placed .22 round would do little more than make a big cat stop and think again before continuing an attack, but I would not stake my life on a .22 bullet to defend me against a predator of that size and disposition. If I knew I actually might be threatened by something that could actually kill and eat me...I would be carrying a shotgun.
NanaKat! I want to meet you at POOPS...not read about you in the paper!
