Finally caught up with the posts...been really busy with the new baby calves born today and chores around the farm....moving creep feeder to the a pasture with 28 calves.
Certainly enjoyed the discussion last night. Steph...send me a PM with your mailing address so I can send you some recipes to try.
Moved the girls Faith, Hope, Joy and Peace into the big hen house today. They made quick friends with my blind EE and shared her water and food containers up on the roost. Faith and Joy made a trip outside to the run to enjoy the vetch I gave the flock.
Gotgame: we have a Catahoula/Lab (Red) and an Australian Shepherd (Gracie). Both love the chickens and Gracie likes to herd them around. Red is the protector...will lie next to the pens for hours on end. He was attacked by a group of coyotes last November...liked to scared me to death because they followed him into the yard gates yipping and howling for blood and would not be frightened away.
Ivy...glad to hear your hen is improving.
The garden is coming up now...spinach, lettuce, cabbage, potatoes, radishs, onions, garlic, broccoli, peas, beets, collards, carrots....the list goes on.....

I had a friend who quite a few years ago had a great dane, good dog but they have very short lives. 7-8 years is what the vet told him after his died.
we are leaning pretty strongly towards a mastiff, they live a surprisingly long time...I would love a mastiff cross, between two different breeds of mastiffs or mastiff/great dane, for health issues...I have had cattle dogs, I am sure there are exceptions but for the most part they will not make guardian dogs for chickens...I had also considered an english sheepdog...

If you are looking for a livestock protection breed, I would go with Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, or Komondor. Carla swears by Komondor. I like the first two breeds. They are bred to protect livestock, generations of genetics give them the temperament and instincts for it.
I now have four LDGs (all Great Pyr/Anatolian mix like Nocityboy's) and a black lab.
I had considered pyrenees but what happens if you are trying to catch one of 'his' hens and the hen goes to squawking and throwin a fit? I am looking for a guardian for my wife and myself as much as our livestock. I would be happy with a dog that is protective of us and our property from other people and critters, and just ignore the chickens...
