Years ago I had a couple Chows, for protecting property their might not be a better dog very territorial. But they can be a handful when they quite a few years.

My mothers barks at the mailman everday, but put him on a leash and walk him, the mailman has passed by on the sidewalk and the dog ignored him. If they are raised around children god forbid someone that tries to hurt a child.

I thought about that, but I kept remembering your little call ducks...

What about the ducks? The dogs never touched them. it was a bobcat that was coming up at night, early morning.

Ah, well. If the dog is properly trained it will never hurt you. You just have to acclimate it to you. There are some folks who say you want a surly beast that never interacts with humans, and they can be raised that way, but to me that is a recipe for disaster.

But if you want a mastiff, I don't think that is such a bad idea. Mastiffs are in fact a protection breed (just looked it up in Livestock Protection Dogs, by Orysia Dawydiak and David Sims). They were originally bred for it same as a GP or Anatolian or Komondor.

So, sjarvis is right about her recommendation. The Tibetan Mastiff is particularly recommended, as is the Pyrenees Mastiff.

Get the above book, by the way. Best resource out there for selecting, training, and caring for LGDs. You might also check out this site...
