i feel for ya haveing to pay that for birds, i have a herd of bantam cornish i have picked up in several places in the last year. i think the most i paid per bird was 12.50.

i think in my large cornish i paid like 10 a bird.

all are from show stock, so i guess they are pretty good birds.

it is not the price of the bird that makes a darn bit of difference, it is the bird itself. i have gotten birds from show breeders that werent worth giveing away.
i bought 15 birds at an auction one friday, sold them on saturday, and all but 3 were on champion row 2 weeks later.

paying too much for birds means nothing, other than too much was paid.

bloodlines are a joke, just because i have birds that win everynow and then means nothing about my birds. you take a half decent bird and treat it right it will get better. you take a half decent bird and do a few tricks to it and it becomes a fantastic bird!

if you know what you are looking for, you can find good breeder birds about anywhere without haveing to pay ridiculous amounts for them.

Medfordz,
there are a large number of birds based on breed, color, origins, that far exceed $100 a bird. These are the birds that can will compete well beyond teh small local shows. these are breed for national and regional competitions. They are well worth the investment if a person is serious about a long term breeding program for exhibition fowl.

if someone paid 900 bucks for a pair of of chickens at auction, that just means there are at least 2 people that shouldnt be allowed to breed. thay are only polutting the gene pool. either that or they realy hate each others guts!

who told you that their ofspring would sell high? must have been the owener of said high priced birds.

i dont care how much the birds cost, most the chicks will not be the quality of the parent stock. if you hatch a hundred, you might get about 10 good show quality chicks out of that hatch. oh i know, any bird is show quality, all you have to do is enter it in a show.

but we have gotten off track, my origional post was about people paying to much for chickens and eggs at auctions and swaps.

if you can tell the quality of chick growing in an egg by looking at it, i will bow down to you.

show them to me. i would like to know what i need to watch for.

and lets see the show placement of these breeds of birds.

only reason a bird is worth 100 bucks each is they lay golden eggs.
and there is no way they are worth the investment to anyone but the person selling them.

It sounds to me that everyone needs to agree to disagree.

When it comes down to it. You can pay whatever something is worth to you & stating someone "shouldn't breed" is going beyond a good debate.

I would like to suggest that the subject be dropped because those of us that don't care what anyone would or would not pay for a bird don't want to see the thread shut down when things go to far in a debate.

here is a pic of a 150$ bird

and that was a good deal if you do not belive me just do a littel reserch or you can just look at the buy sale pages on BYC and see how much eggs are selling for your self

i could make a list that gose on forever with birds that you will not buy for 5 $

like i said, all you gotta do is look around.

if my 5 dollar bird dies, i lost 5 bucks. if your 150 dollar bird dies, you lost 150 bucks.

and yes i can buy them from a very well known breeder for about 15 a head at 8-9 months of age if i wanted too.
