You are in good company since several folks are in the Midwest City - Harrah - Choctaw - Jones area.
If you come across any jars with honey comb imprint let me know - we might be able to negotiate a deal of some sort.

Do you have any chickens or other poultry yet? What would you like to have? Perhaps we can "assist" you in acquiring the poultry you desire.

Corny is an ex-battery hen. She escaped from the egg factory, was picked up by a bird, then dropped into the Stewart yard. The Stewarts washed away her blood and tended to her torn skin, then adopted her into their family.

off to get posers mate today, and still trying to get a taxi for my NN hen, maybe just meeting halfway would be helpful....

Since Easter isn't until April 24 you have a long time to wait. So, when Easter is in March you plant in March?

I am pleased that the turnips and mustard greens and one of the leaf lettuces are sprouting.
Once the lettuce bolts, it will still be good for the bees because then it will have flowers, plus I figure that I can always feed the extra to the critters.

Good to see you Maribeth!!! Hope you are feeling better.

I wondered that too on the Easter date. I didn't really plant for the chickens this year but I am sure that they will end up with some of my stuff. After this year (when I see how it goes with my new plan) I might try to plant more for them.

My goodness you all are a verbose group! I spend half an hour just reading to catch up!

Thought I'd share my son's new obsession - his NNs:

It started with just a couple of naked neck hens that were in a flock of 30 birds we inherited from friends who were transferred out of state. This was our first introduction to chickens - nothing like diving in with both feet first! LOL He fell in love with the birds that he thought looked like Velociraptors from Jurassic Park

Then we kept getting deeper. I bought some more NN pullets and acquired a roo for my son:

He named him Raptor

Good morning everyone! I must say, I'm getting garden envy! finances made me choose chickens or garden, and I chose chickens first. Garden will come next year, or maybe just a very small one later in the season.

The term is bolting...this means that the lettuce plant begins to send up a flower stalk from the center of the rosette of leaves. You will notice this difference in the center about the same time as the lettuce begins to have a white sap when you break off or cut the leaves.
There are several varieties of lettuce that are slow to bolt in heat.

Any chance you know what varieties those are??? I will have to look at the package to know what I have.....just know that one was red & one was green! They are sprouting now, I am so excited. Got onions popping too and one potato, wonder if I didn't get him deep enough.....

I plant Romaine for head lettuce (it will also bolt later and will self sow for a fall crop. Also makes it late into Dec in spite of freezes.) For leaf lettuce: Red Sails, Black Seeded Simpson and Oak Leaf.
Most head lettuces will crack and bolt or not head up in our hot weather.

Thanks, Sooner.

GotGame - those are some BEEYOUTIFUL birds! But I'm afraid of I started one more pen going, my husband would up and walk out! LOL
