Good night all. This talk of breeding to a standard or particular color has me glad that I just like pretty hens that lay large eggs. All the decision making sounds like "work" to me.

I liked the looks of the darker pair you have better. I think those are the first blues I have ever seen! The only OE I have is a blk mottled hen,she was in a pen by herself at a sale and I got her for a couple of dollars. She is so cute. I have her with my pyncheon pair. They are about the same size. Might get some cute crosses out of that!

Al, I was thinking I should only keep the blue chicks I hatch from that rooster, and probably mostly bigger ones, am I right?

I am pretty proud of the blue spangles. As proud as I can be of birds I bought, lol...if or when I produce some good ones, THOSE I will be proud of

I really like mine. Although I opened a thread on the breeds section and showed apic of mine and the "expert" shot them down pretty good! I know the roo isn't good because he lacks a crest but since he is all I have I hope some of the chicks crop out with the proper crest like the hen. I don't intend to show anyway. But I will try and correct the obvious flaws so That the birds I produce help keep the breed going. They are very friendly littlle birds .

I just recently started using clippers on the hens toenails since we changed the floor of the run to sandy loam I never trimmed the spurs up to the attack....never knew they could twist off or that a potato could be used....hmmmm

I use dog clippers on the nails but Maribeth I know on my dogs nails I use a dremmel tool to file them. I wonder if that would work to round the nails and the spurs?

you can use the dremmel on the spurs it works fine
have done it
just go slow if you go to fast spur might start to bleed
