Good morning all! Yesterday I got the idea to build a small pen for the new chicks - they've outgrown the bin they were in, and are traveling around all over. Well, the pen idea turned into a small coop idea, to use up some extra wood I had laying around. One piece is too warped, so will have to replace it. Will head over to Home Depot afterwhile for a few things. Hope this doesn't turn out to be a disaster. I have a tendency to get in over my head when I start new projects. We'll see...

Morning all...........

Good morning everyone. I had a thought last night as I was trying and failing to go to sleep. When we bought the second batch of chickens the owner recommended that we give them electrolytes in their water to help with the stress of the move. So when we got home we did that and kept it in the water all last week. Could that be why all my chickens have stopped laying?

I have Pipping this morning, right on time, since my thermostat upgrade this hatch has been effortless and much more controlled. I should have a whole bunch of little ones running & stumbling around by the time I get home from work. Tomorrow I will be home all day doing my prep for Surgery, so I will be watching the Bator and on the BYC all day LOL.

No probably not, chickens get stressed easily for a bunch of different reasons, perhaps just the new additions to the flock have caused some issues, they should start pretty soon.

Good morning everyone, its supposed to be a another nice day. I need them nice days, lots of garden prep to be done. I have decided to cut back on some of my bantams and have a beautiful trio of buff rocks for sell. They are 8 months old and the hens started laying last month. The rooster is fertile and active. I have just hatched 15 from 20 of their eggs. I am asking $45 but might consider a trade for something standard. I like amerucanas, I like blue and I dont need any more roosters. Let me know if your interested or might know someone who is. Thanks. Hope everyone has a good day.

Donnie, no worries. It happens, & it could be my brood stock as this is a new pairing from what I had going on last year. I've found adding vitamins in the water a couple of times a week does help sometimes. The advice Les gave is great also if you want to try it. I'm going to try to pick them up this weekend if thats good for you.

Hi Kassaundra,

A friend brought my attention to this thread and I'm very glad to see someone adapting my BSF bucket using found materials. I'll be adding some options on my composter page for lowering the cost to build it using new material, but free is always better.

One problem I see is that the Velcro has gaps in it. When there is condensation present on the walls of your unit the larvae will simply crawl up and around your Velcro and out the vent holes. BSFL are escape artists! Even with a continuous strip a few will get out, but with that configuration you'll lose a lot.

I can't see your funnel very well, but make sure it's snug against the wall of the unit or the vast majority of larvae will go around it. The interface between the funnel and the unit wall is the fussiest part of this design.

Quote:
There is confusion about the protein/fat content of BSFL. Dried larvae are 42% protein and 35% fat according to the most widely referenced study I can find. The fresh/live larvae are about 17% protein and 9% fat according to information provided by Dr. Craig Sheppard, the owner of the Phoenix worm company. The calcium content (8155 ppm) must be great for chickens too.

I'm not certain about the science but I believe it's risky to raise larvae using manure and then feeding the resulting larvae back to the same class of animal. In other words I wouldn't feed bird manure to larvae and then feed those larvae back to birds. I assume the risk involves pathogens in a loop.

I love what you're doing, good luck! If you have any questions I would be glad to help if I can.
