ya, he was super protective of my 3 year old niece, she was playing with my old boxer male, and that heeler jumped on the boxer, 'protecting' my niece, and she was in the middle of a dog fight...had to get rid of the heeler...

dang i would have loved to have him

I love heelers, and its great yours is that good with chickens, but yours would be more the exception than the rule, I have known more than 20 heelers in my life, and have owned 3, and that mentality in a heeler is definitely in the minority, but as I stated before i fyou can get one that lacks some of the intense drive they are bred for, they make great dogs....would love one myself if I didnt have so many dogs and could turn their 'drive dial' down a few notches...

My blue heeler who is the smartest dog I have ever had, was a lost and found dog. We were horse back riding at Carl Blackwell and he (as a young pup) showed up under our horse trailer and no one claimed him all weekend so he came home with us. He has had NO training. It is like he just understands english. He does try to herd up the horses wether they need it or not, but so far have not seen that at all with the chickens. But again, only had the chickens for a month.

Donnie you said you would be selling them at the store. Does the place you work let you sell chicks? Tha would be a great outlet! I noticed at our TSC today that they had put all their chick tubs behind fence panels! And the rabbits too! Must have been catching grief about the kids being able to handle them. They had some new ones in,looked like maybe wayndottes and partridge rocks or EEs . Boy they were huge chicks. I guess because I'm used to seening my bantam chicks!

Robin is she a first time layer? Sometimes they will take some time to get their act together. As Michael said too give her a little extra calcium.

Here is a little recipe to feed her.

To help a bird recover from illness, they need extra protein.. this formula really helps them with thier recovery

My Treatment is this

Feed the birds three times a day for three days a mixture of

This mixture is what you will need for the entire three feeds…. It is not 3 egg yolks and 3 teaspoons of honey etc…. divide the contents into three

½ to 1 x egg yolk….. give the whites to the other hens mixed into their seed or pellets (depends a lot on the size of the egg yolk)

1 teaspoon honey…. .given for energy

2 x tablespoons yoghurt…. Given for calcium and also to make the bowel go back into normal production after this upset
Only use the plain yoghurt never the one with fruit or extra sugar in it, not good for the bird

¼ teaspoon calcium powder (if you can’t get the yoghurt)

3 to 4 tablespoons rolled oats…. To give substance to the feed, or use chicken crumbles or layer pellets but soften them with some boiling water first

Sprinkle of multi vitamin powder (only if you are not already giving it to them in their drinking water, don’t overdose) just a few grains will usually be enough for this size mixture

2 to 4 table spoons of apple sauce or grated apple, it must be grated not chopped up for ease of digestion

Mix to make a crumble mixture not runny

Come get all you want, we really haven't had it that bad, this part of our great state doesn't get real dry..
Dug a posthole yesterday and had water in it at about 1foot..didn't need to add any water for the cement to set up..
