Yep- hard lesson- but i can't blame barny at all- i gave him treats which confused the issues for him- gorgeous bird- even that small interaction caused problems- my theory now is look, enjoy them but hands off unless necessary! with the current roo i am using that theory- he will come over when i dish out food, but i'm not interacting specifically with him, although i may need to do his spurs- dreading that- but gotta do something with them- maybe just file them down a bit?

My theory on spurs is to leave them be unless they become a problem. They are his natural defense against predators. I know you supervise them when you let them roam, but you never know what may happen.

So, as long as he's respectful to people and not tearing up the hens, he's alright for a white guy

Has anyone ever thought about sticking a couple of those little "happy face" car antenna balls from the '80s on the end of their roosters' spurs? I think that would effectively eliminate the chance of injury and cheer up the whole flock at the same time!

PATENT IDEA - I thought of it first!! (this post copyrighted by CityClucks, 2011)

City..we is Danes! Original vikings!

I'll have you know I can get just about as much in my little car as P&B does the magic poultry van! well not really but I hauled 300 lbs of feed and a bunch of birds and rabbits so there

and for the record you do't have to feed guns everyday like chickens....although it is very fun to feed rounds through them real fast!!!

Can someone post a picture of this tire planter...I swear the old owner of this property collected tires, we have them everywhere and no way to get rid of them!
Would be great to find a use for them.

You plant first, allow the potatoe plant to come up and add a tire as it grows at least 10 inches above the ground, add additional tires and dirt to make th eplant grow taller and it sets new roots and grows more potatoes from what was the green stalk. We used 5 gallon buckets instead of tires both work well. When you are ready to harvest a stack you kick it over, new potatoes on the space closest to the top and they get bigger as you go down the stack. I have seen these as high as 4 ft.

cool idea, just planted potatoes for the first time this year.

Bought him at Atwoods in Shawnee. I think they get their chicks from Ideal or McMurray. The bin wasn't labeled and the girl that helped me didn't know her birds. She told me he was Buff Orpington, but the comb isn't right.
Thor has a really small comb and hardly any wattle.
Here is another photo of him.

Oh my gosh...Thor is "rough" looking next to this guy!

I like them both. I am partial to buffs of any breed. We have a pair of bantam buff cochins and the pullet has 7 eggs in a clutch now. I hope she goes broody. I'd like to see some buff babies. She is very fluffy butted though, if her eggs are fertile I'd be suprized.

Thanks for the update - I knew you were planning to keep the BO and the BL - which others did you decide on? Thanks for telling me most of them took inspiration from Mrs. Buster and came in like Dragon Ladies at the top of the flock. It doesnt't hurt for some to believe you are more intimidating than you think you are - kudos to Erlene!

I had a great time talking to you today - thanks for taking the time to eat a late lunch with me! I look forward to seeing you again May 14th.

I love it! I've got to see a rooster running while wearing those.
