Olathians here is an article you should read!

Hey there fellow Olathean!

I saw this article the other day and I have mixed emotions. I'm glad that they're okay with it for now but I'm concerned that they are thinking about banning it completely. I'm sure if enough of us got together they would re-think it, but what do I know. It's good to know we have several Olathe people here!

Yes, it is. We just began the process to get our special permit. I am praying that everything works out we love our chickens and they are part of our family. I hate to even think of not being able to keep them.

Well please let us know how it goes! I have thought about getting a special permit but then I thought, what if they don't give us a permit and try to take away our chickens instead? I think I'd rather remain quiet for now.

If we had a choice I would as well. Chickens are absolutely wonderful! I have MS and not only do they provide therapy for me. They provide our family with wonderful healthy organic eggs! I would love to have some support at our hearing if any of you would be interested in supporting us! I adore Olathe and want to stay in the community, the just need to be open minded about this. Follow the people who have them and see how wonderful it is.

@Lav3nderSage I actually don't have a special use permit. I just keep my birds quiet and away from attention. I wasn't aware that there was such a grand fee! Are you currently living in Olathe?

I do live in Olathe and from what I've read online about the city ordinances, chickens are considered "farm animals" and would require a SUP. The process of which is tedious, lots of paperwork, court appearance, $377 fee. And if it's approved, you only have the permit for a year. You must reapply every year, which includes a 70 fee. On top of that, your permit can be challenged at any time, by anyone. If a neighbor complains, it could be revoked.
