Hes going through a molt right now so I don't have any good pictures of him. The other hens are beat up from too many roosters, this is the only one in decent condition right now. I just went out and heres another one that looked decent.

A few years back Billy Sumner was raising some WFB Spanish bantams. I brought some home for my boys. They raised them a few years and showed them with good results. A hawk attack put them out of the WFB Spanish bantam business, but they were really good birds.
The large fowl are as hard to come by these days, good ones that is, as the bantams are.

After Joe passed away, a friend of mine met his sons who had been maintaining the birds but were tired of them taking care of them so he bought all the birds they had left, I got egg form them about 5 years ago and have been working on lengthening the back and whitening the faces. These are great birds and have done very well in shows.

For those of you interested in old and rare breeds of fowl: whether it be breeding, locating stock, or just an interesting read.


Many today refer to heritage or heirloom breeds of fowl. Nothing in the world wrong with those words; they are real eye-cathchers, but they are not well defined. Many times they are refering to Modern Breeds that have been created since 1900.


There are truly Ancient Breeds of fowl that are included in our APA Standard that need breeders across the country. These would include:


Asil

Dorkings

Malays

Old English (Large Fowl)

Nankins

Pyncheons


There are also many others that are not presently in the Standard.


Further, there are many Old Breeds which are excellent utility fowl that need help as well. These would include:


Creves

LaFleche

Houdan

Java

Polish

Red Caps

Shamo

Sussex


There are others too, but you get the pictures.


Some of the Modern Breeds that are in need of breeders include:


Cubalaya

Delaware

Holland



etc.


I'm in hopes that you'll write about the breed you keep or ask questions before you acquire stock.


Where a written standard for your breed of choice does not exist in the US, hopefully we will be able to provide you with one from the country of origin.

Man were would I be able to get some old English n asils

Hi OSUMan. I like your hen. type looks good and tail spread is nice, back slope is nice. In this photo you can tell that her face is extending below the wattles which is what you want. You don't see them that often with this extension of face, UNIFORM chalk white to boot. This is a good example of the breed. Have you weighed her? She appears well filled out. For anyone who hasn't had the opportunity to feel these birds (LF), don't let the slight build fool you. These birds are DENSE! My cockerels seem to put on weight overnight, they are heavy - weight for cocks should be 8 lbs.
