We moved onto our new property last year and discovered a nice big dog house on the other side of the creek. It's about 3 feet by 4 feet with a shingled roof and pretty well built. I was wondering if this could be converted into a bantam coop? I'm hatching out mille fleur cochins this spring and getting a pair of silkies. Would this be an alright size for 4 banties? Any ideas on modifying it for ventilation/cleaning/predator protection?

Thanks!

I am actually doing the same thing right now. I have only 3 bantams going in it, and my dog house is 4x4 with the highest side at 3 foot and slopes to a 2'. I am cutting out big squares in the sides and covering with hardware cloth, there is a arched opening on the front and I found some plywood that will make an okay door for it, just need some hinges and a latch to lock them up at night... then on the back I want to make a big door for me to be able to clean it out, and then a small perch that is maybe 3 or 4 inches off the floor... I am only including one nest in hope that 2 of my 3 bantams are hens...

Can you post a picture of your future banty house?

Wow nice! I'm hopeful I can make this work! I'm thinking I want to elevate it off the ground about two feet, and build a run underneath and projecting outward from the coop. I just have to figure out how to do it without compromising the structure...I'm NOT a very handy person...haha!

Thanks. I just built the bottom box first and then my DH and DS helped to pick up the little building and set it on top of the box. Then I attached it to the box. The double doors are now in the back and the little door on the front is just for decoration. I entered it in the coop contest. It didn't win, but I'm still proud of it. I'm always working on something for my chickens. This is going to be for Seramas.
