Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Johnn, the black chick you have in your pictures looks like a cockrel, is that right?
well thats what people have said, so most likleys is, im not fussed as i want another cockerel, but i dont want another two so the BO chick better be a girl!!

well its not really the fact i dont want that many cockerel theres just not enough hens so it wouldnt be fair on them...

Im so annoyed i cant find any growers pellets for sale anywere! well not ones that arent 20 pounds a bag!

this morning the hatch began- and i came up with an idea- bring staypuff in with her box and see what she does with an egg that had just pipped- well, she stood there and listened, looked at the bator with 3 babes cheeping and then back and forth a few times...back at the egg and settled down, i put a couple more eggs, no problem, but she kept looking at the peeping babes- ok, so i tried one, she scooped him under, so now she has 4 babes and 3 in hatching mode on the coffee table in the living room in a dog carrier- to make sure since she is a first time mom, she doesn't hurt one

When I went to Tractor Supply today they had 1 bag of Mannapro Chick Starter on the shelves - I asked if there were any more and the woman pulled 5 bags from the back. Sometimes they just don't have the stock out. Hopefully you'll find your grower pellets. Although I have read that grower pellets can contribute to cannibalism - something about the pellets being difficult to chew so they turn to each other instead. Not sure I believe it - but I do know that my layers HATED the pellets. I ended up going to crumbles because they turned their little beaks up and would only forage instead & their eggs were starting to get soft shells. Now they have crumbles and oyster shell and they scarf that stuff down.

Awh that's great! She looks like a proud momma. I figured she must be a silkie if she took them that easily :)
