Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

It looks like these guys will be the only chicks from these eggs! The other two eggs were completly blank, and the other fertile one was smashed a few days ago by an errant hen ):
We'll be going to see if the eggs we gave to a friend hatched later today, so hopefully these won't be the last of the chicks!

EDIT: Just got news from my friend- one has hatched, and some others are hatching! This little baby must have literally just hatched, he's still all tuckered out and soggy and gross xD

I put 12 eggs nder my broody on the second of this month, when will I expect them to hatch? Can I move her and the eggs now and put her in the large dog carrier so she and babies are safe from other chickens for a few days? Or is this not recommended? I want my mommy chicken to keep all her babies together until all the eggs hatch, I added 4 eggs after the first 8 under her the next morning and there for 4 eggs are 1 day older then the 8. I want to move her to a very large dog crate so she stays put for all the eggs to hatch. I will add food and water for the new ones that come . Can I do this at this point? And is it safe?

I would leave her alone until at least one chick hatches and is dried off. She will stay on the nest for 2 or 3 days after that. If you move her with the hatched chick and the rest of the eggs which haven't hatched, she should be fine. In the meantime, can you section off the area where she is so the other hens don't add to her clutch?

It takes 21 days so if you gave them to her on the second, they should hatch on or around the 23rd.

. I never did get a reply so I moved her . She took it well, I moved her eggs from under her, then put her in the new nest, she sat right on them. There was no where for her but the nesting box in the coop, I was worried for the chicks, but they will be ok in the pen, in a few days when all hatches I will take the door off and let her do what she wants to do.

Thank you! I just went out and candled the eggs they have veins in them and a little tiny fetus forming!!!I'm really excited for her she sure wants to be a mama. They should hatch Oct 15.

I had a serama hen go broody on one egg and it hatched, and I also had 2 serama eggs in the incubator hatch a week later. So today since I moved the seramas indoors because of the weather I gave her the chicks that hatched in the incubator. She seems to be taking care of them. I didn't know if this was a wise decision or not but I will keep an eye on them and see how it goes

Hello, My little silkie is broody she has beeen setting on her nest for 4 days now. The thing is I do not have any eggs to put under her to hatch they are all in the fridge and she was my only hen laying at the moment so what can I do. I have been getting her off the nest everyday to let her eat drink and get a treat and to walk around. but what do I do and what will happen when there are no eggs for her to set on there is nothing for her to set on she is just setting on the nest fluffed up and cackling at me. What do I do.

I have a broody girl sitting on 7 eggs that are due on Tuesday. I just got a few new hens from a friend and one is very broody. She is now sitting on 2 wooden eggs. Do you think I should put some of the other eggs under her (that hatch on Tuesday) or let her sit on the wooden ones one give her a couple of chicks when they hatch under the other girl?

She has been sitting on wooden eggs at her old home too. Do you think I can fool her into thinking those are hers? She is a silver ameracauna.
