Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

cellphone pic, but best I could do for now.

My broody is actually very nice, she has never screeched at me and only halfheartedly pecked at me while the eggs were hatching. Now she's letting me manhandle the chicks at will.

Thanks Lydia, that makes me feel much better. She laid an egg yesterday from what I can tell and I really want to hatch some of her babies, sad thing is the rest are in the fridge, ugh. I am going to wait a few days and see what she does but as of now she is sitting on an empty nest. She will be my 9th broody this spring so far (I have six hens that recently hatched chicks, 2 more sitting and now her)

The broodies I've had so far are
2 Black Australorps (hatchery stock between the 2 of them hatched 6 chicks)
1 Olive Egger (hatched 3 in April, broody again)
2 Black Copper Marans (1 hatched 1 chick, 1 still sitting on 6 eggs)
1 Salmon Favorelle (hatchery stock, hatched 1 chick)
1 Ameracana (Hatched 2 chicks)
1 Game Hen (still sitting on 10 eggs)

I am about broodied out, I guess you get what you wish for, ha ha.

I know what you mean about being broodied out I am on my 8th 9th counting my Muscovy hen who is sitting, sounds like you have a nice selection of chickens, I really would like to have an olive egger. maybe oneday, just checked on my hen 2 out and one peeping so by end of day she'll be first time proud mama.

I'm not sure about the smell unless she is going potty in her nest box, but you would diff. know that..

but the moisture is just her way of regulating humidity. think incubator

and Congratulations on the Broody!!!

Miss Lydia thank you for your reply!

No she's definitely noy going poop in the nest box, she is a year old and she is doing great, everything she is supposed to do! I thought that the moisture was coming from her, I just wanted to make sure, cuz it smelled a little like body odor LOL! I really didn't want a broody, but she is my sweetest bird and I felt bad for her and I did not want to put her through the stress of breaking her. So,she's gonna be a mommy! Thanks again for the reply and your help

Cute pictures!

This is the first time we're doing the Broody Hen way, traditionally we would incubate the eggs but we decided to give it a try since 4 of our girls are the best broodies. We have two silkies on top of their own eggs (one of then has two and the other has four eggs) and we have a silkie/leghorn cross on another set (she has ten!

But the eggs are a variety that we want to hatch from silkies to amaracaunas.) Originally we had a fourth girl, another silkie/leghorn cross on top of a set but the other chickens were getting at her eggs so we had to move them.

Im excited to see if this method works for us, and if it doesn't well then there's always another time.

We have about a week or two to go!

I have a Bantam Salmon Faverolle pullet that had 17 Bantam eggs under her. She hatched 14 and all are doing well. I need to get a new camera with a cable so I can post picutures. Very Cute! They all hatched Friday night to Saturday morning. All are eating, drinking, standing on mom and snuggled under her. She is a first time Mother and is totally awesome at her job. She's not even a year old yet! These are Cochin x babies I only have Bantum Cochin Roosters. I have a Barred Cochin hen sitting on 20+ eggs in the barn. Last year, she hatched two clutches of eggs for me 8 and 11. Several days ago, I ordered Salmon Faverolle eggs via the U.S. mail - they're under another broodie cochin in one of my goat barns. This is my first time setting eggs I purchased through the mail - I hope at least a few hatch. I started with 18. Bantams are little hatching machines...best broodies you could ever want. None of my girls are agressive with me - very sweet chickens!

If you have another broody and want some OE eggs, I can send you some, just let me know.
