Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well my Black Sumatra Broody hatched 8, 1 died. Yesterday when I briefly saw it, it looked crippled. She did the right thing and let it pass. But she has 7 HEALTHY happy babies. I'm very proud of her.

My Blue Sumatra mama is being what I call a good mama. VERY Defensive! She even puffs up at me at times, and charges my legs. No one would dare touch her chicks. THAT is my definition of a good mama!

More pics!!! Broody and grey chick #1 (there are two identical ones):

I have a Bantam Salmon Faverolle pullet that had 17 Bantam eggs under her. She hatched 14 and all are doing well. I need to get a new camera with a cable so I can post picutures. Very Cute! They all hatched Friday night to Saturday morning. All are eating, drinking, standing on mom and snuggled under her. She is a first time Mother and is totally awesome at her job. She's not even a year old yet! These are Cochin x babies I only have Bantum Cochin Roosters. I have a Barred Cochin hen sitting on 20+ eggs in the barn. Last year, she hatched two clutches of eggs for me 8 and 11. Several days ago, I ordered Salmon Faverolle eggs via the U.S. mail - they're under another broodie cochin in one of my goat barns. This is my first time setting eggs I purchased through the mail - I hope at least a few hatch. I started with 18. Bantams are little hatching machines...best broodies you could ever want. None of my girls are agressive with me - very sweet chickens!

Well Congratulations JoJo, I just love my cochins bantams, they do make great broodys and mamas. hope your mail order eggs do real good..

Okay, so I am going to try this. Getting 6 eggs to put under my BO. We are still getting snow so my hen just went broody a few days ago. I think I am going to move her into a dog crate in the coop so the other hens won't keep trying to lay eggs on top of her. Silly girls.

here is the new Black Sumatra Mama and her little ones. You can only see 5, but she has 7. The other 2 are behind her. This is the 1st that I know of that she has brought them outside.
