Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

loobyloo8, how are your chicks today? Can you post a picture of the one with the turned in leg?

You can correct the toe on the chick in the picture by trying a chick shoe made with pipe cleaners. It should correct the problem in a day or two. Let me know if you want to try this, and I'll explain in more detail.

My 3 wk old chicks...one of the clutches had some gurgly sounds and sneezing this morning. They all seem energetic and active, no signs of sickness. Would you give it a day and see how they look or treat with an antibiotic asap? I have Tylan 50 on hand.
I had a couple of chicks that were sneezing. Since it was only a portion of them I thought it was allergies. We had switched them from paper bedding to hay. It was the hay that was causing them to sneeze. If they are acting alright it might be OK to wait. Anyone else have a different idea?

Broody orp and chick are in a safe place now! Dolly appears to be broody now! Would just kick her off, but she's an old girl and this could be her last chance! Just my look! Will rather look for female day old in a couple weeks time or set some duck eggs. But I don't want her sitting too long so duck eggs maybes aren't the best option! Lacey also appears to be going broody so of she is I will get her one too (assuming I can find some).

I had an americauna hen go missing and finally found her nest outside in my terracing. She had layed 13 eggs!! We now have 11 little americauna chicks. I had had broodys hatch out 11 prior so I was done with chicks for this year, but I guess she had other plans!!

I am thinking it may have been due to all the moisture we have had in the coop this spring (record breaking amounts of rain). I am planning on spraying the coop down with either Oxine or bleach, and holding off on treating with antibiotics unless they appear to get worse?

So happy with my Maran getting her EE chicks inside. I had to help the silky again tonight. She was trying to show them how to hop up inside, but the little Olive Eggers were having trouble. One managed to hop up all by itself, but the other two I helped "hop" each level while momma stood puffed up and ready to strike me. Hopefully by tomorrow they will be going in and out by themselves.

I am not a big fan of antibiotics, though I do recognize they have a place and time for use... since I rarely use them though I can't provide an educated opinion on your little one's course of treatment other than to maybe give the little ones a treat of scrambled eggs and fine chopped sunflower seeds as an energy boost, maybe with a dollop of plain yogurt. By feeding it as a treat to the broody and whole clutch it will encourage the little one to eat it, even if it may not be in as much of a mood to.

The emergency treatment threads are frequented by folks with an amazing amount of knowledge for medications and when to give them... I would go over there to do some searches and post a question if you don't find a similar situation already covered.

Sorry I couldn't offer more help, I hope the little one recovers quickly!
