I found a broody sitting on 2 dozen eggs.

I've got chicks coming out of my ears. I've got two other broodies and have already had 3 batches of chicks hatch. Is it winter yet?

Sorry to switch directions here but I have a question. I am waiting on eggs to hatch that are under my broody. Today is day 21. My question is about temps. It was 103 here yesterday. I wonder what affect that kind of heat has on the hatch rate of eggs under a broody?

Yes, it does affect hatches. Broodies will do their best to cool off the eggs if needed, but one of my best broodies only hatched 2 of a good 8-10 eggs. Both were roosters of course. I think the rooster eggs survive a higher heat index.....YAY

Good luck

Mine are through with the broodiness, they just don't know it yet. I have one that is sitting on nothing and seems content.

bb, has anyone tried to listen to the eggs to see if they are peeping?

I just asked my DH today did he listen to see if he heard peeping.....omg....he looked at me like I had finally lost my mind!

Remember I am trapped!!!! Foot surgery has me stuck in my bedroom. I did get to the front door on my knee walker and out the door and into the golf cart to drive out there to see the egg that was dented. Yesterday. Nothing has happened with that egg. She will get off the nest when we take her food. Eat and get right back on after drinking. The set up is good and there is shade all day and we pull the tarp out so air can flow inside the crate. Still.....it is just really hot here right now! Today is day 21. If the eggs do not hatch tomorrow my SIL will be back and we have talked about it. We will feed and block off the crate and remove the nest. My plan is to put the entire thing up on concrete blocks for a couple of days and then into the big run for a day and then the next night put her in the coop with the others.......if the eggs don't hatch by Tuesday morning.

I have an incubator.....I will check the eggs that we remove and 'make sure' and if necessary put them in the bator....but really I think if they are not hatched by tomorrow morning they are not going to.

I hate that I can't get out there myself!! She did get off her nest this afternoon. DH even came and asked for something to feed her and he thinks we are crazy for fixing her special treats everyday. But she got off the nest and my DSD took pictures of the eggs again for me!

Really....I think this is a done deal....one more day to be sure!
