Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

bb, has anyone tried to listen to the eggs to see if they are peeping?

I just asked my DH today did he listen to see if he heard peeping.....omg....he looked at me like I had finally lost my mind!

Remember I am trapped!!!! Foot surgery has me stuck in my bedroom. I did get to the front door on my knee walker and out the door and into the golf cart to drive out there to see the egg that was dented. Yesterday. Nothing has happened with that egg. She will get off the nest when we take her food. Eat and get right back on after drinking. The set up is good and there is shade all day and we pull the tarp out so air can flow inside the crate. Still.....it is just really hot here right now! Today is day 21. If the eggs do not hatch tomorrow my SIL will be back and we have talked about it. We will feed and block off the crate and remove the nest. My plan is to put the entire thing up on concrete blocks for a couple of days and then into the big run for a day and then the next night put her in the coop with the others.......if the eggs don't hatch by Tuesday morning.

I have an incubator.....I will check the eggs that we remove and 'make sure' and if necessary put them in the bator....but really I think if they are not hatched by tomorrow morning they are not going to.

I hate that I can't get out there myself!! She did get off her nest this afternoon. DH even came and asked for something to feed her and he thinks we are crazy for fixing her special treats everyday. But she got off the nest and my DSD took pictures of the eggs again for me!

Really....I think this is a done deal....one more day to be sure!

what do you mean by that? listen stony says he has had them hatch on day 25 so anything is possible. If you could get SIL to listen tomorrow morning for any peeping.

keep the faith! Late hatches do happen. Eggs are not on a timer! And yes I once had a hatch complete on day 25, and my Sumatra's are normally early... day 18 and day 19 generally. But once it was day 25 before it was all done....

I'm glad to hear that some go early. This last batch came yesterday which surprised me because I had them marked to be due on the 6th. I thought I was just going crazy.

Before I give up I would candle an egg at least. I also have a stethoscope that served me well on my last two hatchs. I had to hold the egg with a cloth and the listening part of the steth to be able to really hear. But I could hear the chick pecking inside the shell. So I will cover all bases before giving up....worst thought is throwing the eggs away and hearing a peep!!

well Broody Sumatra # 11 of the year wouldn't move, or be broken, so I built fort knox around her, and surrounded that with Hav a hart traps. She is on 3 Sumatra eggs.
