Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Poor little Blue died overnight. I'd been worried that she wasn't growing. Now Gwen only has one chick left. I hope it makes it!

I had one from my first hatch that did not make it. A little tiny cochin baby. It lived for three days. Did everything I could think of. Instead of running around with the others she would just stand there. Sometimes drink. Sometimes eat. It was very sad.

So sorry for your loss.

I know you were concerned about lil Blue how is the other one doing. My bantam cochin has only 1 chick and even though she is old enough to be on her own she still hangs with her mama. Roosts next to her every night.

Splash looks strong. She's feathering out nicely and hangs close to mama.

Although small, Blue looked fine last night but she was dead on the floor or the coop this morning. It didn't look like she was pecked or anything. I guess it's possible that she got squashed but I sure hope not. It makes me scared for Splash.

I know it does happen they get stepped on and such, but I think mamas try to be as careful as possible, gosh when my hens are dust bathing and scratching, they will sling their chicks half way across the yard if they get in the way.

They have to be tuff. Probably something was wrong and sometimes it's not so much on the outside. Natures way of taking care of her own. Splash should be fine.

We are 2 days shy of 3 weeks, and we have a very strange arrangement with the feathers: Epaulettes?!
