Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

This shows Asparagus's size more, his dad (not real dad) is about the same size as Bella mebys smaller, but the mother is deffo alot bigger than Rocky!, so as you can tell Asparagus is already alot bigger! and my other cockerel is 8 and struggles to keep balance so Asparagus could probablies easily bully him when he gets cocky. If you look very very carfully, you can see his spurs coming through :)

wow he is a big boy, hope he doesn't get to aggressive. I love your landscape where you live. The grass is perfect for nests. You should let them lay in the field then go egg hunting

Quick update. My 8 mo old RIR (hatchery girl) is still faithfully staying with it. I have a quick question for stony or anyone else that has thoughts.

Right now she's in an area of the hen house that is separated off with a hardware-cloth covered door in between. They can all still see each other, but the other crowd can't come over and contribute to the eggs!

That being said, after the hatch (if I get any) should I just open the door between the two right away? Or..should I wait until they grow a bit?

If I don't open that door, mamma can't go outside as the entrance is on the other side of the coop.

Thoughts/experience please?

I'd give them about 3 days, usually the mama will wait about 3 days after hatch before she is ready to bring them out to meet the world. It's not set in stone though so watch her for the cue. But most of my mamas usually wait 3 days.
