Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Outside for the first time!, it was only for about 10 mins because the chicks were getting cold, so she lied down to let them under so I thought that was the best chance I was going to get to catch them. I picked her up and one chicks was left on the floor then the other fell out her wing so I quickly scooped them up before they could react.:

sooooo cute

Question, i have about 3 days before our eggs are due to hatch. I have decided for the safety of the chicks i will seperate broody hen from the other chooks. What i want to know is when should i do this??? I have a nice little hutch set up that is secure and safe for the hen and the little ones. Should i settle the broody hen in there now before the eggs hatch or wait until they have arrived?? HELP!

You have only 3 days left till they hatch? Might be a little risky to move her right now, if you do I would do it at night as well. I have messed with my broody's coup 2 times after she got settled in and both times it ticked her off and she abandoned the nest. If you wait just move her right after they are all hatched or shut her area off so that no other hens can get to her and the chicks.

So sad! Today I went out to check on my broody buff orp and found her dead! I didn't check on her last night so am not sure how long she has been off the eggs. Trying to figure out how to jury rig an incubator. I brought the 6 fertile eggs inside and have them under a heat lamp (100 degrees F). Hopefully they didn't get too cold! They were to hatch in 5 - 7days.

Oh gosh, that is so heartwrenchingly sad! You could check Craigslist and see if anyone has an incubator, or put an ad up there and see if you could add your eggs under a broody that doesn't have eggs.

Do you know how she died? Was she on the nest or what? How horrible!

Not sure why she died. She was getting up once a day or so and eating and drinking (and having very big poops!). A few days ago her poop looked runny and she had a hoarse sounding cluck.
