Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Bunny's RIR chicks are 7 weeks old and she's been laying for about three weeks, so naturally she's back in the nest box tonight to brood. UGH!

What is up with this Maran! She's worse than my Silky. I thought she was trying to go broody again by the way she was clucking, but tonight she confirmed it. I took her out of the nest and put her on the roost only to have her scurry right back into the nestbox. Well she's sitting on air and I'm going to break her this time!

Hey that is a good idea, my hen is pretty protective as well.  I am just glad it does not hurt when they peck.

Agnes hurts wen she pecks, but the worst part is that she gets freaked out and stomps the eggs. Putting the container over her head has helped tremendously in keeping her calm. Best advice I've gotten in dealing with a broody ever

You could get her some eggs to hatch if you can't break her.

Quick question: My broody now has chicks. Her upper beak is somewhat overgrown from lack of normal wear. It doesn't look critical yet but it's definitely noticeable. She still eating just fine, but if it gets much longer it will probably be a hinderance. Do I need to worry about this or is it just a typical broody thing?

hi all. It has finally happened. I have an Australorp who has been on the nest for two days. She got up for a bit this morning but went right back to sit on her golf balls and mango seed. I am planning to giver her 4 or 5 eggs to see how she does. Should I move her or just see how it goes? There are 5 laying hens and two other nesting boxes but the broody is, of course, in the favorite box. I will mark the eggs I give her so I can tell what is what.

If I don't move her and other hens lay in her box should I pull those eggs out or just let her be. I don't want to mess to much with her. All opinions welcomed!

She's a horrible hatcher, breaks her eggs and lets everyone into her nest. And I don't need any more chicks.
